Product Description
Wandering Woods is part of my Cracked Pepper Cowl Series which started September 1, 2014. It's not to late to join in. Wandering Woods is the second in the series.
It is late fall in the woods. Almost all of the leaves are off the trees and the forest floor is covered with leaves. You wander through and all of your senses come alive in the season even though winter is just around the corner. Sometimes it’s so quiet you can hear the last leaves fall and drift to the ground. It is most relaxing as you wander through the woods.
A little spice, a little sass and lots of class! Wandering Woods is a fun to knit cowl suitable for beginners. For more experienced knitters this will just fly off the needles. It’s so pretty you’ll knit several!
Wandering Woods Cracked Pepper Cowl by Phyll Lagerman
Project Overview
Wandering Woods is a knitted cowl design inspired by the quiet beauty of late fall in the forest. Designed by Phyll Lagerman, this cowl combines textural interest with elegant colorwork, featuring a "Cracked Pepper" aesthetic achieved through strategic color placement. The finished cowl measures approximately 59 inches in circumference by 7½ inches in depth, making it a generous, versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering and styling.
Difficulty Level and Knitter Suitability
Wandering Woods is classified as an intermediate knitting project, though the designer notes it is accessible for beginners while remaining engaging for experienced knitters. The pattern works quickly enough that many knitters find themselves wanting to create multiple versions. The straightforward construction means that even newer knitters can successfully complete the cowl, while the visual impact and stitch patterns provide enough interest to keep experienced knitters entertained throughout the process.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This cowl is worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. The pattern incorporates two-color knitting techniques to achieve the distinctive cracked pepper colorwork effect. The design uses contrasting colors strategically to create visual texture and depth without requiring complex stitch manipulations, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to develop their colorwork skills at an intermediate level.
Yarn and Materials
Wandering Woods is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, specifically The Alpaca Yarn Co. Astral. This yarn blend combines 30% alpaca, 20% merino wool, and 50% tencel, creating a luxurious, breathable fabric with excellent drape. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of color 8168 Gold Rush (Color A) and 1 skein of color 8160 Copper Penny (Color B), with each skein containing 110 grams and 197 yards. This yardage combination totals approximately 594 yards, providing ample material for the generous cowl dimensions.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern requires two circular needle sizes: US #6 (4.0mm) needles and US #8 (5.0mm) needles, both in 24-inch length. The recommended gauge is 4.5 to 5 stitches per inch when worked in stockinette stitch. The designer notes that while achieving exact gauge is not critical to the success of this project, working toward this target will help ensure the cowl achieves the intended finished dimensions and drape.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The Wandering Woods cowl draws inspiration from the sensory experience of walking through a forest in late autumn. The design captures the essence of falling leaves, quiet moments, and the transition from fall to winter. The "Cracked Pepper" colorway—combining warm gold and copper tones—evokes the natural palette of autumn foliage and forest floor. This cowl is described as having "a little spice, a little sass and lots of class," indicating a design that balances visual interest with sophisticated, wearable elegance.
