Victorian Rose Shawl - PW-102

Product Overview

The Victorian Rose Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet design created by designer Nancy Brown. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a stunning triangular shawl featuring dimensional rose motifs worked from the center outward. The finished shawl measures approximately 60 inches across the top edge and 30 inches from the point to the top edge before the border is added, making it an elegant wrap suitable for layering or display.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a large triangular shawl constructed from crochet squares arranged in a geometric layout. The design centers on rose-inspired floral motifs that form the structural basis of each square unit. The shawl is worked modularly, with individual squares combined to build the full garment, then finished with a coordinating border treatment.

Techniques Used

  • Modular construction: The shawl is built from individual squares that are joined together to create the overall triangular shape
  • Dimensional petal work: Petals are bent and shaped forward during construction to create depth and realistic rose-like texture
  • Layered stitch building: Multiple rounds are worked into chain loops to create the dimensional floral effect characteristic of the design
  • Border application: A decorative border is added after the main shawl squares are completed

Stitches and Special Techniques

The Victorian Rose Shawl employs fundamental crochet stitches combined with specialized embellishment work. Core stitches include single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), slip stitch (sl st), and chain stitch (ch). The pattern features a signature special stitch called the Triple Picot, which is constructed as follows: chain 3, slip stitch in the 2 front loops at the top of the double crochet just made, chain 5, slip stitch in the same space, chain 3, slip stitch in the same space. This creates a decorative textured edge detail that enhances the Victorian aesthetic.

The rose square construction begins at the center with a foundation chain and works outward in expanding rounds. Early rounds create the petal structure using slip stitch and double crochet combinations. Subsequent rounds build upon these petals by working into chain-loop spaces, creating the layered, dimensional appearance characteristic of realistic roses. The gauge for this pattern is one square measuring 5½ inches by 5½ inches.

Materials Required

The Victorian Rose Shawl pattern calls for Yarn Bee Caterina yarn in the color Regal Rose #0360. A total of 5 balls are needed, with each ball containing 3.5 ounces and 295 yards of yarn. The yarn weight is DK (double knit), which provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the intricate rose details and picot embellishments. A Boye crochet hook in U.S. size G is used throughout the pattern to work all stitches and create the proper gauge.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations and shaping techniques. The modular construction and dimensional petal work require attention to detail and understanding of how to manipulate stitches for three-dimensional effects, but the individual techniques are clearly explained within the pattern instructions.
