Knitted Vest and Crocheted Hat in Schachenmayr Sun City – Pattern S6944

This downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr presents two coordinating accessories: a classic knitted vest (waistcoat) and a matching hat, both worked in Schachenmayr original Sun City yarn in olive (Fb 00271). The pattern is available as a free download and covers three sizes: 34/36, 40/42, and 46/48, making it a versatile project for a range of adult figures. The combination of a textured wave motif with a simple garter stitch base gives both pieces a relaxed, tactile quality that suits casual everyday wear.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr original Sun City, aran weight, in olive (Fb 00271) – 550 g / 600 g / 650 g depending on size
  • Knitting needles: Prym knitting needles size 4–4.5 mm
  • Crochet hook: size 4 mm (used for finishing edges)
  • Buttons: 7 buttons – Jim Knopf, Art. 11238, 44", colour 10, available from specialist retailers

The Knitted Vest (Waistcoat)

The vest is the primary garment in this pattern and is knitted flat in separate pieces – a back, a left front, and a right front – which are then seamed together. It is a structured, button-through waistcoat with shaped armholes and a neckline, making it a satisfying intermediate knitting project. The construction follows a logical sequence: a long garter stitch lower section transitions into a decorative wave pattern for the upper body, giving the garment visual interest without excessive complexity.

Construction and Shaping

The back piece begins with a cast-on of 74 (92/110) stitches and is worked entirely in garter stitch (kraus rechts – every row knitted) for 50 cm. In the final wrong-side row of this section, 4 (5/6) stitches are increased evenly across the row using twisted lifted increases from the horizontal thread between stitches, bringing the total to 78 (97/116) stitches. The pattern then transitions into the wave pattern, which is worked over a repeat of 19 stitches, set between edge stitches, with the full repeat worked 4 (5/6) times across the row.

At 55 cm total height – after 10 rows in the wave pattern, specifically after a second pattern row – the armhole shaping begins on both sides. Three stitches are cast off once on each side, and the armhole borders are then worked in 6 stitches of stockinette (smooth knit) stitch on either side of the central wave panel. Further armhole decreases follow: 2 stitches cast off once, then 1 stitch cast off twice on each side, leaving 64 (83/102) stitches. All remaining stitches are cast off straight at a total height of 74 (76/78) cm.

The left front piece is cast on with 38 (48/56) stitches and worked in garter stitch for the same 50 cm lower section. Increases of 2 (2/3) stitches are made in the final wrong-side row, giving 40 (50/59) stitches. The wave pattern is then worked over 2 (2/3) full repeats of 19 stitches plus edge stitches. Armhole shaping at the right edge mirrors the back at 55 cm, reducing to 33 (43/52) stitches. The neckline shaping begins at 64 (66/68) cm at the left edge: 6 (11/13) stitches are cast off once, followed by further decreases every second row – 2 × 3 stitches, 1 × 2 stitches, and 4 × 1
