Product Description

This crochet pattern is for a menswear sweater, with rib texture stitch and (optional) colour stripes. It is made with aran yarns and a 6mm crochet hook, so it works up fast. The finished tension is soft and very comfortable to wear. The front and back are made sideways, flat and in one piece, with one seam. The collar is added directly to the body. Sleeves are made separately and sewn on. As it is an oversized shoulder, there is minimal shaping in the body. Sleeves do taper to a nice fit around the wrist. There is a photographic guide on the textured stitch and any special construction. The textured stitch is a Third Loop HDC, or 3Lhdc There is a lot of stretch in the finished item, so the sizing is only approximate. I have listed this pattern as "intermediate" because of pattern techniques. You are purchasing the .pdf pattern only, which includes full written instructions. One purchase gives you all sizes.

Vertical Stripe Aran Sweater by SeyhallCrochetDesign

What is Being Made

The Vertical Stripe Aran Sweater is a crocheted pullover garment featuring bold vertical stripes in contrasting colors. This intermediate-level crochet project produces a finished sweater with a classic striped design, available in five size options ranging from Small (92 cm chest) to XXL (124 cm chest). The sweater lengths vary slightly by size, from 67 cm to 75 cm, making it suitable for different body proportions and style preferences.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental crochet construction methods appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The sweater is built using consistent stitch counts to achieve accurate sizing, which makes matching tension critically important throughout the project. Crafters are advised to adjust hook size if necessary to achieve the specified tension of 14 half double crochet stitches by 11 rows per 10 cm square. The vertical stripe effect is created through strategic color changes worked into the fabric structure, allowing the stripes to run lengthwise down the garment pieces.

Stitches Used

The Vertical Stripe Aran Sweater utilizes the following crochet stitches:

  • Half double crochet (hdc) – the primary stitch forming the main fabric
  • Single crochet (sc) – used for shaping and finishing details
  • Chain stitch (ch) – for foundation rows and stitch spacing
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – for joining rounds and securing stitches
  • Double crochet 3 together (dc3tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping the garment

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran, a 100% acrylic yarn in aran weight. The yarn is worked with a 6mm crochet hook. Total yarn quantities vary by size: Small requires 800g total (400g Orange, 400g Racing Green); Medium, Large, and XL each require 900g total (400g Orange, 500g Racing Green); and XXL requires 1000g total (400g Orange, 600g Racing Green). The color palette features Orange and Racing Green, creating a vibrant vertical striped effect. Additional equipment includes stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a large eye needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together.

Pattern Details and Finishing

The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions using US crochet terminology and standard abbreviations. Stitch markers play an essential role in maintaining pattern accuracy throughout construction. The large eye needle is necessary for the finishing stages, including seaming body pieces and weaving in all yarn ends for a polished final garment. The emphasis on matching tension ensures that finished measurements align with the provided size chart across all five size options.
