Product Description
Vampolka mitts are a super quick knit and need only a small amount of yarn. The three skeins of Shibui Sock are perfectly enough yarn to make all three color variations shown. Time to turn your whole family into little vampires!
My husband is a huge fan of Devin Townsend, and when I heard his song “Vampolka” it instantly got me hooked. It has a catchy tune and it’s a little crazy, like most of his songs. Apart from the haunting melody I couldn’t forget the name as well: Vampolka. It’s just a little crazy and I asked myself over and over: How on earth did this band have the idea for a marriage between vampire and polka, two things that obviously have nothing in common? And how could it be that in the end everything worked out perfectly in a way that everyone would say “A vampire and polka? Yeah sure, I had thought of combining these two as well!”
Anyway, I started thinking about a way to bring these two together in knitting..

Vampolka Knitted Gloves and Mittens by Melanie Berg
Project Overview
Vampolka is an advanced knitting pattern designed by independent designer Melanie Berg that creates a pair of gloves or mittens inspired by the fusion of vampire aesthetics and polka styling. This downloadable PDF pattern combines dramatic design elements with playful detailing, resulting in a statement accessory that merges gothic sophistication with whimsical charm.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The Vampolka pattern draws creative inspiration from the juxtaposition of two seemingly incompatible concepts: the dark, elegant world of vampires and the cheerful, rhythmic tradition of polka dancing. The designer incorporated signature vampire wardrobe elements—specifically wide, baroque-style cuffs in black—with classic polka dot patterning to create a cohesive and visually striking design. The combination of these contrasting themes results in gloves and mittens that are both sophisticated and playfully unconventional.
Key Design Features
- Baroque-Style Cuffs: Wide, ornate cuffs that evoke vintage vampire fashion and add dramatic flair to the wrist area
- Black Colorway: The primary color choice reflects the gothic vampire aesthetic central to the pattern's concept
- Picot Edging: Decorative picot edge detailing adds a sexy, refined finish to the cuffs
- Polka Dot Patterning: All-over or strategic polka dots provide visual interest and represent the polka element of the design
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an advanced-level knitting pattern, Vampolka employs sophisticated techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The pattern requires proficiency in colorwork knitting to execute the polka dot pattern accurately. The picot edging involves specialized stitch manipulation to create the decorative scalloped or pointed edge detail. The baroque cuff construction likely incorporates shaping and stitch increases or decreases to achieve the characteristic wide, structured silhouette.
Yarn and Materials
Vampolka is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering weight. This yarn weight is ideal for creating detailed colorwork patterns and achieving crisp stitch definition, which is essential for the polka dot motif to read clearly. The 4-ply weight also allows for precise shaping in the cuff and hand areas. Knitters will need appropriately sized needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in the US 1–3 range depending on desired gauge and needle material preference.
Skill Level Considerations
This pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, making it best suited for knitters with solid experience in colorwork, stitch manipulation, and garment construction. The combination of polka dot colorwork, picot edge techniques, and baroque cuff shaping requires comfort with multiple simultaneous techniques and the ability to read and interpret complex pattern instructions.
