Product Description
My V-shaped shawl pattern (which can also be used as a scarf) will see you through all seasons. You can use a silk or cotton yarn for lightweight spring and summer wear, or wool-based yarns for cozy autumn and winter wear.
The pattern is for one size, which will fit most people, with the finished scarf measuring 84" (213.5 cm) along the lower edge.
The shawl is made with fingering weight (4 ply) yarn and the stitch pattern is easy to work.
My patterns are written in plain English which makes them easy to follow whether you are a newbie crocheter or you have many years of experience, but you can always message me if you have any queries about my patterns.
V-Shaped Shawl Crochet Pattern by Sarah Taylor
What Is Being Made
The V for Versatile collection features a V-shaped shawl designed by independent crochet designer Sarah Taylor. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a versatile shawl suitable for various occasions and styling preferences. The V-shaped construction offers a flattering silhouette that works well as a wrap, shoulder piece, or layering garment.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using crochet as the primary craft method. Crochet is an accessible fiber art technique that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn. The V-shaped shawl pattern demonstrates fundamental crochet construction, making it an excellent choice for beginner-level crocheters who are building their skills and confidence with basic stitches and shaping techniques.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The pattern utilizes a main stitch pattern worked consistently throughout the shawl construction. The gauge specification of 24 stitches and 12 rows over a 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) swatch indicates the density and rhythm of the stitchwork. This gauge measurement helps crocheters achieve proper fit and drape in the finished garment.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Two 4 oz skeins (100 g balls) of fingering weight yarn, also known as 4 ply yarn, in the crocheter's color choice. The yardage used in the photographed sample was approximately 459 yards (420 meters) per skein, totaling roughly 918 yards of yarn for the complete project.
- Crochet Hook: One Size 4 (3.5 mm/E-4) crochet hook, which pairs appropriately with fingering weight yarn for the intended gauge and fabric characteristics.
- Notions: One stitch marker or contrasting color thread to mark stitches and track pattern progression during construction.
Yarn Weight and Fiber Characteristics
The pattern calls for 4 ply fingering weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating delicate, drapey garments. Fingering weight yarn produces fine, detailed stitchwork and allows for intricate stitch definition. The two-skein yardage requirement makes this an efficient project that doesn't demand excessive yarn quantities while still producing a substantial, wearable shawl.
