Product Description
Possibly the weather may be a little dark and dreary during the cold months, but the Unicorn Crochet Mitten Pattern will brighten up your life for sure.
Warm hands with a ray of the rainbow, does it get any better? This is my third mitten pattern and I just might be addicted to crochet colorwork and Fairisle.
The Unicorn Crochet Mittens are worked in the round continuously to avoid an unsightly seam. There is a video tutorial on a similar mitten to help guide you through the main parts of the construction.
Unicorn Crochet Mittens by Briana K
What is Being Made
The Unicorn Crochet Mittens are a pair of adult-sized mittens designed by Briana K, featuring colorwork inspired by fair isle patterns. These mittens are worked in the round continuously, creating a seamless construction. Each mitten measures 4.25 inches in width and 10 inches in total length including the cuff. The finished mittens require approximately 410 yards of yarn total (roughly 205 yards per mitten in each color), making them an ideal project for using two coordinating yarn colors.
Techniques Used
The Unicorn Mittens employ several advanced crochet techniques that elevate this project beyond beginner level. Colorwork is central to the design, utilizing a fair isle approach adapted for crochet. The mittens are worked in the round continuously without joining, which creates a seamless fabric and requires careful stitch counting and marker placement. Back loop only (BLO) stitching is used throughout the pattern to create specific texture and structure. The pattern also incorporates split single crochet and split single crochet 2 together stitches, which are specialty techniques that add dimensional detail to the colorwork sections.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) - used for foundation and construction
- Slip stitch (sl st) - for joining and shaping
- Split single crochet (ssc) - primary stitch worked through the back loop only, creating the textured colorwork base
- Split single crochet 2 together (ssc2tog) - used for decreasing and shaping the mitten structure
Materials and Specifications
The Unicorn Mittens are designed to be worked with Chroma Fingering yarn by WeCrochet in two colors: Color A (Grey) and Color B (Groovy). This yarn is composed of 70% Superwash Wool and 30% Nylon, offering durability and easy care. The yarn weight is fingering weight (3-ply to 4-ply), and each ball contains 396 yards per 100 grams. Construction requires a Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook. The pattern calls for standard finishing supplies including a removable stitch marker, yarn needle for weaving in ends, and scissors. The gauge is established at 21 stitches by 25 rows equaling 4 inches in the square worked in the round using split single crochet.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate/Advanced, reflecting the complexity of the colorwork technique and the continuous round construction method. Crocheters should be comfortable with basic stitches and have experience working in the round before attempting this project. The split single crochet stitches and fair isle colorwork require attention to detail and consistent tension.
