What is Being Made
Ukrudt is an advanced knitting pattern for hand-knitted socks inspired by the Danish word for weed. This downloadable PDF pattern offers three size options—small, medium, and large—accommodating shoe sizes 35/37, 38/40, and 41/43 respectively. The finished foot circumference measurements are 21, 22, and 23½ centimeters across the three sizes. The pictured sample is worked in a luxurious blend of 50% merino wool and 50% silk, hand-dyed with mugwort for a natural aesthetic.
Techniques Used
This advanced sock pattern employs several sophisticated knitting techniques to create a refined finished garment. The pattern includes optional cuff customization, allowing knitters to increase cuff width by working the cuff section on larger needles before transitioning to smaller needles for the remainder of the sock. The construction involves a traditional sock knitting approach with a defined heel section and lace patterning integrated throughout the design. Loose casting on is specified to ensure proper elasticity at the sock opening.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch element featured in Ukrudt is a lace pattern, which creates an open, decorative texture characteristic of advanced sock design. The lace pattern is worked to a specific gauge of 30 stitches and 40 rows per 10x10 centimeters, ensuring proper fit and drape. The pattern also incorporates standard knitting stitches necessary for sock construction, including ribbing for the cuff and stockinette stitch for the foot and leg sections.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Ukrudt requires fingering-weight yarn with a yardage of 200–210 meters per 50 grams. The total yarn quantity needed varies by size: 75–100 grams for small and medium sizes, and 100–125 grams for the large size. Recommended yarn options include Malabrigo Sock, Cascade Heritage Solids, Cascade Heritage Silk, and Lang Yarns Magic Tweed, though any fingering-weight sock yarn meeting the specified yardage requirements will work.
Needles and Notions
- Primary needles: Double pointed needles size 2½ mm for the main sock construction
- Optional needles: Double pointed needles size 3 mm for knitting an optional wider cuff before switching to 2½ mm needles
- Additional notions: A yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion
Proper gauge is essential for this advanced pattern; knitters are advised to always use a needle size that achieves the specified lace pattern gauge of 30 stitches and 40 rows per 10x10 centimeters, as individual gauge varies among knitters. The pattern begins with a loose cast-on of 62 stitches and continues with one knit round before proceeding to the cuff and lace sections.
