Product Description
This versatile poncho, with its picot hem detail suits any little one from newborn to approx 10 years, creating a useful layer on a cool day or extra layer on cold days. The roll neck and side buttons mean it is easy to get on and off.
Knitted flat using a slip stitch design, this means no fiddly swapping yarns in the middle of a row as each row is worked in a single colour. The sample shown is Sirdar Supersoft Aran, knitted on 5mm (US8) needles, but as the fitting is loose and prefect gauge is not critical any yarn knitting to the same gauge will work perfectly well.
For sizes see Schematic in pictures.
It take between 2 and 8 balls of yarn, dependant on size knitted.

What is Being Made
The Twyning Poncho is a versatile, child-sized knitted poncho designed to fit little ones from newborn through approximately 10 years of age. This garment functions as a practical layering piece suitable for cool or cold days, featuring a roll neck and side button closures that make it easy for children to put on and take off independently. The loose, comfortable fit makes it an adaptable design that works across a wide age range without requiring precise gauge accuracy.
Techniques Used
This poncho is knitted flat using a slip stitch design, which is a key feature that simplifies the construction process. The slip stitch technique means that each row is worked in a single colour, eliminating the need to swap yarns mid-row—a common challenge in colorwork knitting. The design includes a picot hem detail at the edges, adding a decorative finish. The neck is worked in the round using either a circular needle or double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the smaller needle size, creating the roll neck feature that is characteristic of this design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout the Twyning Poncho is stockinette stitch (St St), which creates a smooth, classic knitted fabric. This fundamental stitch is combined with the slip stitch colorwork technique to build the visual pattern while maintaining the simplicity of single-colour rows.
Materials and Specifications
The Twyning Poncho is designed to be worked in Aran weight yarn, offering a medium thickness that provides good drape and warmth for a child's garment. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Sirdar Supersoft Aran, demonstrating the yarn choice, though the pattern notes that any yarn knitting to the same gauge will work equally well.
Needles required:
- Pair of 4.5mm (US 7) needles
- Pair of 5mm (US 8) needles for the main fabric
- Circular needle or double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the smaller 4.5mm (US 7) size for working the neck in the round
Gauge: 24 rows in stockinette stitch on 5mm (US 8) needles over a 100mm x 100mm (4" x 4") square. The pattern notes that perfect gauge is not critical due to the loose fit of the design, and knitters should adjust needle size up or down after testing their gauge if needed to achieve the correct tension.
Design Notes
The Twyning Poncho's loose fit and forgiving gauge requirements make it an intermediate level knitting project, suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working flat and in the round. The side button closures and roll neck construction add functional design elements that enhance wearability for young children, while the picot hem provides a polished, decorative finish to the garment.
