What is Being Made
The Twotone Sweater is a crochet sweater designed by Ami Ndiaye and available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level project features a classic two-color colorwork design using contrasting yarn shades. The sweater is constructed in a bottom-up method and is available in a wide range of sizes from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements ranging from 33 inches to 64 inches, making it suitable for various body types and fit preferences.
Construction Techniques
The Twotone Sweater uses a structured modular construction approach that breaks the garment into distinct sections. The front and back panels are worked separately in flat rows using back-and-forth construction, allowing for precise shaping at key points. The designer incorporates strategic shaping techniques at the armpit and neckline on the front panel, while the back panel maintains a simpler silhouette without neckline shaping. Once the flat panels are completed, they are seamed together to form the body. The sleeves are then worked in the round for a seamless finish, and a neckline border is added as a final detail to complete the garment.
Stitches Used
This pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level. The primary stitches employed include:
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation chains and pattern construction
- Single Crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for fabric density and structure
- Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog) – used for decreasing stitches during armpit and neckline shaping
These stitches create a dense, structured fabric suitable for a wearable sweater with good drape and durability.
Materials and Tools
The Twotone Sweater is designed to work with Aran weight (weight 4 medium) yarn, which creates a substantial, warm fabric ideal for sweater construction. The pictured sample uses Lion Brand Vanna Choice yarn in two complementary colorways: linen (Yarn A, 5 skeins) and graphite (Yarn B, 3 skeins), allowing for the striking two-tone effect that gives the sweater its name. A 6 mm crochet hook is recommended for this yarn weight, and a tapestry needle is essential for seaming the panels together and weaving in yarn ends. The pattern accommodates both Aran and Worsted weight yarns, providing flexibility for yarn substitution while maintaining the intended garment proportions and drape.
