Product Description

One stitch pattern, two dramatically different textures, worked in extremely different weight yarns. The right side of the fabric is a stylized version of mesh netting or basketweave. The wrong side presents an elegant diamond design with intersection points that appear wrapped.

In Emesh, the right side of the fabric is a stylized version of mesh netting or basketweave. The wrong side presents an elegant diamond design with intersection points that appear wrapped. The lace pattern begins immediately after cast-on eliminating the need for an edging as the lace works as buttonholes. For those wishing to retain maximum flexibility, using JUL Designs Pedestal Button is an excellent option.

Interlace Shawl is a light layering piece utilizing the same stitch pattern with dramatically different results. A simple, sinuous lace pattern borders the upper edge and creates the centre spine. A deep border of zig-zag lace finishes this lightweight shawl.

Two Sides of the Same Coin by Janelle Martin

Project Overview

Two Sides of the Same Coin is a collection of knitted cowls and shawls designed by Janelle Martin that demonstrates how a single stitch pattern can create dramatically different visual effects when worked in contrasting yarn weights. This intermediate-level pattern showcases the versatility of knitting through texture variation and yarn selection.

Design Concept and Stitch Pattern

The collection features one primary stitch pattern that produces two distinctly different textures depending on the yarn weight used. The right side of the fabric creates a stylized version of mesh netting or basketweave, while the wrong side presents an elegant diamond design with intersection points that appear wrapped. This reversible quality makes the patterns particularly interesting for garments where both sides may be visible.

Yarn Weight Options

Two Sides of the Same Coin is designed to be worked in extremely different yarn weights, allowing knitters to achieve the dramatic textural contrasts that define this collection. The pattern accommodates a wide range of yarn weights including cobweb, lace, 3-ply, worsted, chunky, and super chunky options. This flexibility enables knitters to customize their finished pieces based on available materials and desired drape and density.

Interlace Shawl

Project Description

The Interlace Shawl is a companion piece to the Enmesh design within this collection. It functions as a light layering piece that utilizes the same stitch pattern as the other designs in the collection but achieves dramatically different results through yarn weight and construction method.

Stitch Pattern and Construction

Interlace Shawl features a simple, sinuous lace pattern that borders the upper edge and creates the centre spine of the shawl. A deep border of zig-zag lace finishes the lightweight shawl, adding visual interest and movement to the edges.

Top-Down Triangular Construction

The Interlace Shawl is constructed using a top-down, triangular shawl method. Construction begins with a lace "tab," a common technique in shawl design that provides a neat starting point. The tab begins with a provisional cast on. Once the tab is completed, stitches are picked up along its length and the provisional cast-on stitches are placed back on the needles, allowing the shawl to expand from this foundation.

Needles and Materials

The Interlace Shawl is worked on US #7/4.5 mm needles or a size appropriate to achieve proper gauge with your chosen yarn. As part of the Two Sides of the Same Coin collection, this shawl can be worked in any of the recommended yarn weights, from delicate lace-weight options to more substantial worsted or chunky yarns.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable with lace knitting techniques, top-down shawl construction, and working with provisional cast-ons and stitch pick-up methods.
