Twist Collective Coppice Cardigan by Fiona Ellis

What is Being Made

Coppice is a fitted cardigan pattern designed by Fiona Ellis for Twist Collective. This garment features a tailored silhouette with waist shaping and is available in seven sizes ranging from 32 ½ inches to 50 ½ inches bust circumference. The cardigan is intended to be worn with 2 inches of ease and offers lengths from 24 to 28 ¼ inches, making it suitable for various body types and style preferences.

Construction and Techniques

Coppice is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat method, meaning the cardigan pieces are knitted individually from the lower edges upward and then seamed together to create the finished garment. This construction approach allows for precise shaping and easier customization of length during the knitting process.

The pattern incorporates several advanced knitting techniques to create visual interest and a sophisticated design:

  • Cable stitches (including C6BP cable crossings) are featured throughout the design, adding texture and dimension to the fabric
  • Lace stitch patterns are integrated into the design, created using yarn overs (yo) and decreases such as ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together)
  • Waist shaping is achieved through strategic yarn overs and decreases worked on right-side non-shaping rows, creating a contoured fit
  • Seed stitch is used as a foundational stitch pattern, worked over an odd number of stitches with alternating knit and purl stitches on all rows

Stitch Patterns and Details

The pattern provides flexibility in how stitches are worked, offering both text instructions and charted patterns for knitters who prefer either method. When working partial chart repeats at the sleeve edges, knitters must ensure that matching yarn overs and decreases are worked to maintain correct stitch counts throughout the shaping. In cases where insufficient stitches are available to complete cable stitches like the C6BP, these stitches are simplified to stockinette stitch to maintain garment integrity.

Yarn and Materials

Coppice is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn. The suggested yarn is HiKoo Kenzie, requiring 8 to 13 balls depending on size (approximately 160 yards per ball, or 146 meters). This yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for both the cable and lace elements while creating a durable, wearable fabric suitable for a cardigan garment.
