Product Description
A pretty dress set mainly knitted sideways making it easy to incorporate the stripes. The skirt is knitted sideways, so the bottom frill is knitted into the work as you go, The Bloomers are also knitted sideways in one piece, so the waistband and frill are knitted as you go. This means you only have to sew the back seam and gusset. The little shoes and bonnet complete the set. With line by line instructions, this little set is easy and quick to knit up.
Twinkle 4 Piece Knitted Dress Set by Caroline Richards
Project Overview
The Twinkle is a charming pinafore dress set designed by Caroline Richards, created using knitting techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a complete four-piece dress set suitable for reborn dolls measuring 16–22 inches or for babies aged 0–3 months. The set combines practical garment construction with decorative elements, making it an intermediate-level knitting project ideal for crafters with foundational knitting experience.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pinafore dress set comprising four coordinated pieces. The design is tailored to fit multiple sizes, with specific instructions provided for three different sizing options: larger reborn dolls or 0–3 month babies (21–22 inches), smaller reborn dolls or newborn babies (16–18 inches), and mid-range sizing (19–20 inches). The set includes a complete pinafore dress with coordinating components, finished with functional buttons and decorative satin ribbon detailing.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Twinkle pattern employs several essential knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction includes stocking stitch as the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic appearance. Garter stitch is incorporated for textural contrast and structural definition. The pattern utilizes increases and decreases for shaping the garment pieces to achieve proper fit across the multiple size options. I-cord construction using double-pointed needles creates decorative or functional edging elements. Techniques such as knitting through the back loop and knit front and back increases are employed throughout the pattern for precise shaping and stitch manipulation.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and stitches including:
- K = Knit
- tbl = Through back loop
- P = Purl
- dec = Decrease
- st st = Stocking stitch
- Inc = Increase
- G-st = Garter stitch
- KFB = Knit into front and back of next stitch
- sl1 = Slip next stitch

- WS = Wrong side
- yfwd = Yarn forward
- p.s.s.o = Pass slipped stitch over
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Twinkle pattern is designed for double knit (DK) weight yarn or 4-ply yarn, depending on the size being knitted. Yarn quantities vary by size: the largest size (21–22 inch doll or 0–3 month baby) requires 100 grams of double knit wool in a main color (MC) and 100 grams in a contrasting color (CC). The mid-range size (19–20 inch doll or newborn baby) uses 90 grams each of main and contrasting colors. The smallest size (16–18 inch doll or small newborn) requires 70 grams of 4-ply wool in each color.
The example garment shown in the pattern was knitted using Rico Baby Cotton Soft DK yarn: Pink (072) for the main color and White (018) for the contrasting color, demonstrating the suitability of soft, baby-friendly fibers for this project. Additional materials include 3.25mm, 3.75mm, and 4mm knitting needles (needle sizes vary by garment size), 3.25mm double-pointed needles for i-cord construction, four buttons for fastening, and one metre of 10mm satin ribbon for decorative finishing.
Difficulty Level
