Product Description

For Twin Vines, I decided to create a lightweight, A line sweater to throw on as an extra layer or to wear in warmer weather on it's own. To do this, two weights of yarn are used along with a larger than called for needle. Only one color is used at a time. To add to the interest the stripes increase in number as you progress to the shoulder.

Details: Twin Vines is knit in the round from the hem. The neckline is a wide boat neck that is edged with ribbing that echoes the hem. The top is worked as a drop shoulder with stitches for the short sleeves picked up after seaming. This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter who wants to add to their skill set but also an experienced knitter who enjoys a little intrigue without too much fuss.

Size: The sample is being worn with 2 inches of positive ease. Choose a size larger than your bust measurement for a relaxed look.

Twin Vines Knit Sweater by Fatimah Hinds

Garment Overview

Twin Vines is an advanced-level knit sweater designed by independent designer Fatimah Hinds. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated A-line silhouette sweater knit seamlessly from the hem upward in the round. The design features an elegant construction method that minimizes finishing work by carrying colors up the side seams throughout the garment.

Available Sizes and Finished Measurements

The pattern is available in eight sizes to accommodate a range of body types. Finished bust measurements are {30, 33} inches for extra-small and small sizes, (36, 39, 42, 45) inches for medium through large sizes. The schematic included in the pattern provides visual reference for all available sizes.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Twin Vines employs several advanced knitting techniques suited to experienced crafters. The sweater is constructed using the bottom-up method, beginning at the hem and working upward in joined rounds to create a seamless garment. The A-line shaping is achieved through strategic increases distributed throughout the pattern rounds. A key design feature allows knitters to carry yarn colors up the side of the work, significantly reducing the number of yarn ends that require weaving in during finishing.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The pattern includes a legend explaining additional stitches used in the design. Pattern instructions are written with size-specific guidance, requiring careful attention to ensure correct stitch counts and shaping for your chosen size.

Yarn Requirements and Specifications

This sweater requires two distinct yarns to achieve the Twin Vines colorwork design:

  • Dream in Color Everlasting DK in colorway Gilt: 100% Superwash Australian Merino, 275 yards per 100 grams. Pattern calls for {2, 2} (3, 3, 3, 3) skeins depending on size.
  • Dream in Color Smooshy in colorway Sundown Orchid: 100% Merino, 450 yards per 113 grams. One skein is required for all sizes.

Both yarns are DK weight (also called light worsted or 4-ply), creating a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for a fitted A-line garment.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate gauge changes and different sections of the garment:

  • US 8/5.0mm circular needle in 24 inches or longer length, plus a matching set of double-pointed needles for working small circumferences
  • US 6/4.0mm circular needle in 16 inches length, plus a matching set of double-pointed needles

Additional notions include stitch markers (with one distinct marker to identify the beginning of each round), a removable marker for tracking pattern rows, waste yarn for provisional cast-ons or stitch holders, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge

The pattern is designed to 18 stitches and 30 rows measuring 4 inches by 4 inches when worked in Stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly important in a fitted A-line design.

Pattern Notes

Knitters should note that some pattern directions are size-specific, requiring careful reading of instructions to ensure accuracy for the chosen size. The innovative color-carrying technique used in this design reduces finishing time while creating visual interest through the twin vine motif. This pattern is best suited for knitters with experience in seamless garment construction, colorwork techniques, and reading detailed pattern instructions.
