Twin Lakes Cardigan by Therese Chynoweth
Garment Overview
The Twin Lakes Cardigan is an advanced-level knitting project designed as a standard-fitting long sleeve v-neck cardigan. This sophisticated piece features an allover cable pattern combined with beaded rib trims, creating visual texture and refined detail throughout. The cardigan is available in six sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 35¼ inches (89.5 cm) to 54¼ inches (138 cm) and lengths from 23½ inches (59.5 cm) to 27 inches (68.5 cm). The garment is designed to be worn with 1 inch (2.5 cm) of buttoned overlap for a classic cardigan fit.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern is written for the smallest size (XS) with larger sizes provided in parentheses throughout the instructions. When only one number appears in the pattern, it applies to all sizes uniformly. The designer recommends choosing a finished bust measurement that is 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) larger than your actual bust measurement to ensure proper ease and comfortable wear.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced project incorporates several key knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated appearance. The allover cable pattern is the primary stitch feature, running throughout the body of the cardigan to create dimensional texture and visual interest. Beaded rib trims are used to finish the edges, adding both structural definition and decorative embellishment to the neckline, cuffs, and front bands. The combination of cables and beaded details requires intermediate to advanced knitting skills, including cable manipulation, working with beads, and managing multiple pattern repeats across the garment.
Yarn and Materials
The Twin Lakes Cardigan is worked in worsted weight yarn (Medium #4), requiring between 1216 yards (1112 meters) for the smallest size and 1920 yards (1755 meters) for the largest size. The pattern is shown in Classic Elite Yarns Inca Alpaca, a luxurious 100% alpaca yarn that provides softness and warmth. This yarn is available in approximately 109 yards (100 meters) per 1¾ ounce (50 gram) hank. Depending on the size being knitted, you will need between 12 hanks (for XS) and 18 hanks (for 2XL). The sample shown is worked in color #11157 True Blue.
Needles and Tools
Construction of the Twin Lakes Cardigan requires US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) long, which are used for working the main body and larger sections of the garment. Additionally, US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles are needed for working smaller circumference sections such as the sleeves. These needle sizes are appropriate for worsted weight yarn and will produce the correct gauge for proper fit.
