The Tulip Shawl is a crescent-shaped shawl designed by Connie Peng of yellowcosmo designs. This intermediate-level knitting project creates an elegant accessory measuring 66 inches wide by 12 inches tall (168 cm x 30.5 cm). The shawl is worked from the top edge downward, combining simple stockinette stitch sections with an intricate 46-row lace border that adds visual interest and delicate detailing to the finished piece.
The Tulip Shawl employs a top-down construction method, a popular approach in shawl design that allows knitters to work from the beginning edge and gradually increase stitches as they progress downward. The pattern uses a combination of plain stockinette stitch for the main body sections and charted lace stitches for the decorative border. This mixed-technique approach balances ease of knitting with visual complexity. The pattern notes that only Right Side (odd-numbered) rows are shown in the lace chart, with knitters instructed to simply purl all non-border stitches on Wrong Side rows, streamlining the construction process.
The Tulip Shawl incorporates several fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:
The Tulip Shawl pattern specifies Malabrigo Lace Superwash yarn in lace weight, requiring 380 yards total. Lace weight yarn is one of the finest yarn weights used in knitting, creating delicate, airy fabrics ideal for shawls and lightweight garments. The superwash treatment makes the yarn machine-washable, adding practical durability to this heirloom-quality project.
The pattern calls for US #5 / 3.75 mm circular needles measuring 32 inches (81.5 cm) or longer. Circular needles are essential for this top-down construction, allowing knitters to accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl widens. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches by 36 rows per 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch after blocking, which helps ensure the finished shawl reaches the intended measurements.
Rated as intermediate, the Tulip Shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace patterns and charted instructions. The combination of straightforward stockinette sections with lace border work provides an accessible introduction to lace knitting without overwhelming complexity.

I made by description. Wonderful
Lovely designs at extremely reasonable prices. I've been working up this pattern in a silk/merino blend, and although I had to drop to a smaller needle size to eliminate garter tab, it's coming along beautifully, and should be ready in time for gift-giving for a March birthday.
