T-Shirt and Jeans Shawl
Design Overview
The T-Shirt and Jeans Shawl is an asymmetrical knit shawl designed by Susanne Talluri and created by Handmade By Zan Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a versatile accessory perfect for layering over casual everyday wear, such as t-shirts and jeans. The shawl is ideal for cool spring days or cool summer evenings when a lightweight layer is needed for warmth and style.
Final Measurements and Dimensions
The completed shawl features generous dimensions with a wingspan of 77 inches (196 centimeters) and a depth of 20 inches (51 centimeters). These measurements provide ample coverage for draping comfortably over the shoulders and chest.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern incorporates multiple knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture throughout the design:
- Slipped stitches are used to create textured sections that add depth and dimension to the fabric
- Lace panels are integrated into the body of the shawl for an elegant, openwork effect
- Lace border frames the edges of the shawl with delicate, decorative stitching
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The T-Shirt and Jeans Shawl is worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile mid-weight that creates a fabric with excellent drape. The sample shawl uses approximately 460 yards (420 meters) of main color (MC) yarn and 140 yards (128 meters) of contrasting color (CC) yarn, allowing for a two-color design option. The pattern includes suggestions for lighter weight yarn alternatives for knitters who prefer a more delicate finished fabric.
Tools and Equipment
Knitters will need US 10 (6.0 mm) circular needles in a 32-inch to 40-inch length to accommodate all stitches comfortably as the shawl grows. Additional recommended tools include stitch markers to help track lace repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge Information
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 2 inches equaling 18 rows and 11 stitches in the slip stitch pattern when unblocked. While gauge is noted as not critical to this particular pattern, variations in gauge may affect total yardage requirements, making it important to monitor yarn usage throughout the project.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and asymmetrical shawl construction.
