Trysil is a doubleknit shawl with traditional Norwegian stars/snowflakes.
Trysil itself is a town in the mountains of eastern Norway. It is a famous ski resort, offering both downhill skiing and cross country trails.
It's fully reversible, and the size is adjustable in pattern. It can be knit in a variety of yarn weights, from light fingering to DK - as shown, it's knit in light fingering weight.
The pattern includes double knitting instructions for two different methods of double knitting - so it's a great opportunity to try a new technique.

What Is Being Made
Trysil is an adjustable knitted shawl designed by Anna Dalvi. The finished sample displays seven repeats of the pattern rows, resulting in dimensions of 55 inches (140 cm) in width and 27.5 inches (70 cm) in height. The shawl is fully adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the final size by working more or fewer pattern repeats according to their preferences.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the double knitting technique, a specialized method that creates a reversible, double-thick fabric with inverted colors on each side. In double knitting, the knitter works with two contrasting colors simultaneously, creating stockinette-like texture on both sides of the fabric. The technique involves knitting each pattern stitch with one color facing the knitter, then purling the next stitch with the contrasting color on the reverse side. This method produces extra warmth and visual interest, as the pattern appears in one color combination on the front and inverted colors on the back. Each square in the pattern chart represents two stitches, reflecting the dual-color construction method.
Stitches Used
The shawl primarily employs stockinette stitch as the foundation texture, achieved through the double knitting process. The pattern is worked over repeating rows 39 through 74, creating a consistent motif throughout the adjustable design.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 4 skeins total of fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors (2 skeins per color). The sample shown uses Anzula Haiku, which is composed of 80% bamboo and 20% superwash merino, with 500 yards (457 meters) per 100 grams. Colors used are toffee and au natural.
