Product Description
Here is my go-to recipe for top down socks. I have added many sizes for you to use this pattern for many different sized feet. This is a great starting point for fingering weight socks. This is a top down, fingering weight sock with a garter-edge traditional heel flap. It is worked using magic loop; needle 1 will be front of foot/instep and leg, and needle 2 will be back of the foot, leg and heel.

What is Being Made
Trusty Top Down Socks are a versatile fingering weight sock pattern designed by Shannon Larson of Justlivin Designs. This downloadable knitting pattern offers nine different sizes, ranging from Size 1 through Size 9, making it suitable for the entire family. The socks are worked from the top down using the magic loop method, allowing knitters to create either short ankle socks or full-length crew socks depending on preference and yarn yardage available. The pattern is flexible enough to accommodate single-color or two-color designs, and knitters can yield two pairs of shorty socks from 100g of yarn in sizes 1-4, or a full-length sock in sizes 1-7 from the same yardage.
Techniques Used
The Trusty Top Down Socks employ several fundamental sock-knitting techniques that make this pattern accessible to beginners while remaining practical for everyday wear. The socks are constructed using the magic loop method, a technique that allows knitters to work small circumferences on a single long circular needle by dividing stitches between two working sections. The pattern features a traditional heel flap, which provides durability and structure to the heel area—a critical component for socks that will receive regular wear. The heel flap construction combined with the top-down approach gives knitters control over fit and allows for easy adjustments based on individual leg and foot measurements.
The garter-edge detail adds both visual interest and functional reinforcement to the sock opening, preventing rolling and creating a comfortable, secure fit at the cuff. This combination of techniques creates a sock that is both structurally sound and beginner-friendly, requiring only basic knitting knowledge to complete successfully.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure in Trusty Top Down Socks is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric that is standard for sock knitting. Stockinette stitch provides excellent drape and comfort against the skin while maintaining the elasticity needed for a well-fitting sock. The pattern also incorporates garter stitch at the cuff edge, which is created by knitting every round (or every row in flat knitting). Garter stitch is denser and less stretchy than stockinette, making it ideal for the opening of the sock where a secure, non-rolling edge is essential for comfort and longevity.
Materials and Gauge
Trusty Top Down Socks are designed for fingering weight yarn, requiring 200 to 500 yards depending on the size selected and desired sock length. The pattern recommends US #1/2.25mm circular needles that are 32 inches or longer to accommodate the magic loop technique, though knitters should use the needle size needed to obtain the specified gauge. The recommended gauge is 32 stitches and 42 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch when worked on US #1/2.25mm needles.
Additional materials needed include a darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and at least one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds and distinguish between the two working needles when using the magic loop method. Needle 1 holds the front of the foot and instep and leg, while Needle 2 holds the back of the foot, leg, and heel, making stitch markers essential for keeping track of your working sections. The pattern notes that knitters with larger calves who are making full-length crew socks may need to adjust needle size or yarn quantity accordingly to achieve proper fit.
