Triple C Sweater by The Queen Stitch
What Is Being Made
The Triple C Sweater is a cropped crochet sweater featuring prominent cable texturing throughout. This chunky weight design is named for its three defining characteristics: cropped length, cabled construction, and crochet technique. The sweater is uniquely constructed flat from wrist to wrist, creating a seamless integration of sleeves and body in a single continuous piece.
Construction Method
This sweater employs an innovative flat construction technique that works from wrist to wrist rather than the traditional bottom-up or top-down approach. This method allows the crocheter to build the entire garment—including both sleeves and the body—as one integrated piece, which contributes to the sweater's cohesive cable pattern flow and minimizes finishing work.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The Triple C Sweater utilizes several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its textured cable effect:
- Cable Stitches: Front post double crochet (FPdc) and back post double crochet (BPdc) create the signature cable texture by working into the posts of previous rows rather than the top loops
- Advanced Post Stitches: Front post treble crochet (FPtc) adds dimensional variation to the cable pattern
- Foundation Stitches: Chain (ch) and single crochet (sc) establish the base structure
- Building Stitches: Half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc) create the body fabric between cable sections
- Shaping Techniques: Increases (inc) add stitches within rows to shape the garment, while skipping stitches (sk) creates decreases
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Triple C Sweater is designed for chunky weight yarn, specifically calling for Wool and the Gang 'Lil' Heal the Wool' in Aran/Chunky weight. The pattern requires approximately 800–1,200 yards of the main color (Oatmeal) and 170–300 yards of a contrast color (Cocoa) for accent details. The chunky yarn weight creates the "reach-out-and-touch it texture" that defines this design, making it quick to work up while producing substantial, tactile results.
Tools Required
Two crochet hook sizes are needed for this project: a 7mm hook used for the main fabric and cable gauge, and a 5.5mm hook for more refined sections or edging work. The gauge for the main fabric worked on the 7mm hook is 6 stitches measured over the cable gauge.
Skill Level
Rated as Beginner-Intermediate difficulty, the Triple C Sweater is accessible to crocheters with foundational knowledge who are ready to explore post stitches and cable techniques. The straightforward wrist-to-wrist construction method simplifies the building process, while the cable stitch work provides an engaging intermediate challenge.
Design Notes
This pattern is an independent designer creation by The Queen Stitch. Commercial use of pieces made from this pattern requires explicit permission from the designer. The combination of chunky yarn, cable texturing, and cropped silhouette makes the Triple C Sweater a statement piece suitable for cooler weather wear.
