Treola Hat by Therese Hedlund

What is Being Made

The Treola hat is a slouchy-style knitted hat featuring a geometric colorwork pattern. This design is crafted using the knitting-in-the-round technique and incorporates multiple yarn colors to create visual interest. The pattern is written for 4 colors but can be adapted to use up to 12 colors, making it an excellent project for using up smaller yarn quantities from your stash.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs knitting in the round, a fundamental circular knitting method that creates seamless fabric. The design features colorwork, a technique where multiple yarn colors are worked into the same row to create a patterned design. The Treola hat is specifically designed as a beginner-friendly colorwork project, making it ideal for knitters new to working with multiple colors. The pattern includes a geometric colorwork design that is worked from a chart, and the designer provides tutorial resources on reading charts and finishing techniques.

Stitches and Construction

The hat is constructed using basic knit stitches worked in the round. Stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds. The pattern specifies a tension of 24 stitches and 23 rows per 10 centimeters, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The slouchy silhouette is created through the overall shaping of the hat as it's worked from the brim upward.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Treola hat is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight suitable for creating fabric with good stitch definition for colorwork. The total yardage required is 125-135 meters per 50 grams across all four colors. The pattern specifies Rowan Alpaca Soft DK yarn in the following quantities and shades:

  • Yarn A: 69-80 meters in shade 216 Simply Black (primary color)
  • Yarn B: 18-25 meters in shade 210 Rainy Day
  • Yarn C: 18-25 meters in shade 211 Charcoal
  • Yarn D: 18-25 meters in shade 201 Simply White

The yarn is described as a wool or acrylic blend, offering durability and easy care. The pattern recommends using 3.5mm and 4mm circular needles measuring 40 centimeters in length, as well as 4mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the crown shaping when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles. Additional notions include 6 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings. An optional pompom maker sized 5-7 centimeters in diameter can be used to create a coordinating pompom topper for the hat.

Pattern Details

This is a downloadable PDF pattern designed by independent designer Brixton Purl (Therese Hedlund). The pattern is written for beginner knitters interested in learning colorwork techniques. The geometric pattern can be customized by substituting different yarn colors, allowing for creative personalization while maintaining the same construction method and finished hat style.
