Treble Beanie by La'Knits Apparel
What is Being Made
The Treble Beanie is a knitted hat designed by La'Knits Apparel. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished beanie with a circumference of approximately 22–23 inches when worn. The completed hat measures 8 inches wide by 8.25 inches high, making it a classic, close-fitting beanie suitable for various head sizes. The pattern is available as a PDF download and includes optional pom-pom detailing.
Techniques Used
This beanie is worked in the round from the bottom up, a common method for creating seamless, tubular garments. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques including basic knit and purl stitches, slipped stitches, and decreasing methods. These techniques are combined to create texture and shape the hat as it progresses from the ribbed cuff to the crown. The decreasing technique is particularly important for tapering the top of the beanie to its finished point.
Stitches Used
The Treble Beanie utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:
- K (knit) – the fundamental knit stitch
- P (purl) – the fundamental purl stitch
- K2tog (knit 2 together) – a single decrease that combines two stitches into one
- P2tog (purl 2 together) – a purl-based decrease
- Sl 2 (slip 2 stitches purl-wise) – slipped stitches used for various shaping purposes
The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit appearance. The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches by 20 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch using Lion Brand yarn.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: This pattern calls for bulky weight yarn (weight category 5). Approximately 101–105 yards of yarn is required, depending on whether a pom-pom is added. The designer used Lion Brand Color Made Easy and Malabrigo Mecha in Lluvias as tested options, but any bulky weight yarn may be substituted.
Needles: The pattern requires 6.5mm / US 10.5 needles in two configurations:
- 16-inch circular knitting needles for the main body of the hat
- Double-pointed needles (also 6.5mm / US 10.5) for working the crown decreases when the stitch count becomes too small for the circular needle
Additional Notions: A stitch marker is needed to mark the beginning of each round.
Skill Level
The Treble Beanie is rated as a Beginner/Advanced Beginner pattern, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic cast-on, knit, and purl techniques and are ready to work in the round with simple shaping.
