Product Description

A transflection is the composition of a reflection in a line and a translation along that line. Zigzags can be generated from a line segment by repeated application of a transflection. The pattern for this blanket is such that it makes a reversible fabric, perfect for a blanket or throw, pretty on both sides!

SIZE: The pattern is written for a blanket that measures 39" x 36" / 99 cm x 91.5 cm when blocked, but it can easily be made larger or smaller by adding or subtracting repeats of the stitch pattern.

MATERIALS: MC: 400g worsted weight yarn, CC: 100g sport weight yarn

US 8/ 5.0 mm circular knitting needle 32-in / 80 cm in length or longer

2- US 4/ 3.5 mm circular knitting needles 60-in / 152 cm in length (to accommodate two edges of the blanket on each circular knitting needle)

What is Being Made

The Transflection Blanket is a reversible knitted throw measuring 39" x 36" (99 cm x 91.5 cm). This intermediate-level project creates a blanket or throw with a sophisticated mathematical design based on transflection—a geometric composition combining reflection in a line with translation along that line. The reversible fabric construction makes it suitable for display on either side, offering versatility in home décor applications.

Design and Pattern Concept

The blanket pattern generates zigzag motifs through repeated application of transflection principles. This mathematical approach to pattern generation creates visual interest while maintaining the reversible quality of the finished fabric. The design demonstrates how geometric transformations can be translated into knitted textile structures, making it an excellent project for knitters interested in the intersection of mathematics and fiber arts.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This project employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch structure used throughout the blanket, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric
  • Cast On (CO): Used to establish the initial stitches at the beginning of the project
  • Knit (k): The basic knit stitch, worked according to pattern requirements
  • Purl (p): The basic purl stitch, incorporated to create textural variation and pattern definition
  • Make One Left (m1L): An increase technique worked from the front, lifting the horizontal strand between stitches with the left needle and knitting or purling through the back loop according to pattern instructions
  • Make One Right (m1R): An increase technique worked from the back, lifting the horizontal strand between stitches with the left needle and knitting or purling through the front loop as directed by the pattern
  • Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique used to secure stitches and complete the blanket edges

Yarn and Materials

The Transflection Blanket requires 400 grams of worsted weight yarn for the main color (MC). The pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn, providing structure and drape appropriate for a throw blanket. The example shown uses Berroco Comfort, a worsted weight yarn offering 210 yards per 100 grams. Additionally, the pattern incorporates a contrasting color (CC) in sport weight yarn, allowing for creative color combinations and visual pattern enhancement through the zigzag design.

Gauge and Needle Requirements

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project's success. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on needle size and yarn weight used:

  • Larger Needles with Main Color (Worsted): 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
  • Smaller Needles with Contrasting Color (Sport): 24 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch

Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their gauge matches the pattern specifications, as variations will affect the final blanket dimensions and fabric characteristics.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Transflection Blanket is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with increases, multiple yarn weights, and pattern reading. The combination of stockinette stitch with m1L and m1R increases, plus the coordination of two different yarn weights and gauges, makes this an appropriate challenge for developing knitters.
