Product Description

Tranquil is a modern-day henley with everyday wearability. Edged with rolled collar and cuffs, the fabric is “ornamented" with slim vertical bars for a flattering line and has plenty of stretch for a comfortable fit. The raglan styling means all-in-one piece knitting and no seams to finish. The sweater is shown in Madelinetosh’s Tosh DK yarn in “fragrant", which comes in a spectacular array of colors, is soft enough to wear with nothing underneath and is machine washable.

Tranquil Knit Sweater by VERSACIKNITS

What Is Being Made

The Tranquil is a top-down knit sweater designed by VERSACIKNITS, available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5X. This garment features a button-front closure and is constructed as a single piece, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters. The finished measurements range from 28 ½ inches (71 cm) at the chest in the smallest size to 60 inches (150 cm) in the largest size, with lengths varying from 22 ½ inches (57 cm) to 27 ¼ inches (69 cm) depending on the chosen size. The design incorporates negative ease of 1–2 inches (3–5 cm) at the bust for a fitted silhouette.

Construction Technique

The Tranquil sweater is worked from the top down in one continuous piece, a construction method that allows for easy fitting adjustments and seamless shaping. The neck shaping is accomplished using short rows while simultaneously working the raglan yoke, a technique that creates smooth, contoured shoulder and armhole shaping without the need for seaming. This approach streamlines the finishing process and produces a polished, professional-looking garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Tranquil is Shadow Rib, which creates subtle texture and visual interest while maintaining the fabric's drape and flexibility. This stitch pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the specified yarn and needles. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements, and knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the project.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Tranquil is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, specifically Madelinetosh's Tosh DK, which is composed of 100% superwash merino wool. Each skein yields 225 yards and weighs 100 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from approximately 925 yards (850 grams) for the XS size to 1,800 yards (1,275 grams) for the 5X size, requiring between 5 and 8 skeins depending on the chosen size.

The pattern calls for U.S. Size 6 (4mm) circular needles in two lengths: a 16-inch (40 cm) needle for working the neckline and upper body, and a 32-inch (80 cm) needle for working the body once stitches are increased. Knitters may substitute needles of their preferred length as long as they achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers in two different colors (labeled A and B) for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, stitch holders or waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches, and four buttons for the front closure.

Skill Level and Project Overview

The Tranquil is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping techniques. The combination of top-down construction, short-row shaping, and raglan yoke work provides valuable experience in garment construction while remaining manageable for experienced intermediate-level knitters. The downloadable PDF format allows for easy reference during the knitting process, with detailed sizing information and clear construction instructions to guide the maker through each stage of the project.
