Product Description
This easy filet crochet blanket pattern creates a beautiful and effective train blanket ready to take any little one on a journey wrapped in love.
The pattern is in both UK and US terms and includes not only the chart but also the written pattern so is easy to work up quickly whichever you prefer to work from.
I made the one photographed in 8ply (DK/light worsted weight) yarn using a 4mm hook but you could use any weight yarn and relevant hook to create a blanket of varying sizes.
The subtle understated rainbow effect of the colours used adds to the overall effect given from the finished blanket but would look equally as wonderful in a single colour throughout.
Train Filet Crochet Blanket by Helen McLean
Project Overview
The Train Filet Crochet Blanket is a charming crochet design created by Helen McLean of Sew Sew Baby. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 32 inches by 28 inches, making it an ideal size for a baby or toddler throw. The design features a delightful train motif worked using the filet crochet technique, combining visual interest with beginner-friendly construction.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a decorative crochet blanket showcasing a train design. The blanket is constructed as a single piece using filet crochet, a technique that creates an open, lacy fabric with a grid-like appearance. The train imagery is formed through the strategic placement of filled and open spaces within the filet grid, creating a charming visual representation suitable for a nursery or child's room.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Train Filet Crochet Blanket employs the filet crochet technique as its primary construction method. Filet crochet is a traditional technique that creates fabric through alternating blocks of solid stitches and open spaces, forming a mesh-like pattern. This technique is worked from either a written pattern or a chart, allowing crafters to create pictorial designs within the fabric structure. The pattern utilizes UK crochet terminology throughout.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses the following fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the base of the blanket and build rows
- Double Crochet (dc) – A shorter stitch used in filet crochet construction
- Treble Crochet (tr) – A taller stitch that forms the primary structure of the filet grid
- Skip 1 – Skipping one stitch space to create the open areas characteristic of filet crochet
The pattern provides both written instructions and a chart format, allowing crafters to follow their preferred method of reading crochet patterns.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Train Filet Crochet Blanket is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn, specifically Stylecraft Special DK in 100g balls. This yarn is composed of 100% premium acrylic, offering durability and easy care for a baby blanket. Each ball contains 295 metres or 322 yards of yarn.
The color palette includes:
- 1 ball each of Plum, Violet, Cloud Blue, and Meadow for the main blanket body
- Small amounts of Saffron, Spice, and Claret reserved for the border only
While Stylecraft Special DK is specified in the pattern, any DK weight yarn may be substituted. However, using a consistent yarn weight throughout the project is essential to maintain the intended finished dimensions and gauge.
Tools and Notions
The pattern requires a 4mm crochet hook to work with the DK weight yarn at the specified gauge. Additionally, a yarn needle is necessary for sewing in ends and finishing the blanket neatly.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 15 stitches and 10 rows in treble crochet, measuring 10 centimeters square. At this gauge, the completed blanket measures approximately 32 inches by 28 inches. The pattern notes that using a different hook size or yarn weight will alter the final dimensions. To maintain the intended size, it is important to use the same yarn weight and hook size consistently throughout the project.
Skill Level
The Train Filet Crochet Blanket is rated as Easy/Intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with some foundational experience. While filet crochet is a relatively straightforward technique, this blanket's size and the coordination of multiple colors require moderate attention and patience. Beginners with basic crochet knowledge can successfully complete this project with careful pattern following.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes both written instructions and a visual chart. The dual-format approach accommodates different learning styles and preferences among crocheters, whether they prefer following step-by-step written directions or working from a graphical representation of the design.
