Product Description

This gorgeous Soldier and Sack knitting pattern is made to hold chocolate goodies. I have put small sweets in the sack but any similar sweet or sweets could be used. It also fits a Terry’s chocolate orange. This makes a stunning addition to your table, a fantastic fund raising item for fayres etc or great as a novelty decoration.

Toy Soldier with Sack Sweet Pot by Andrew Lucas

What is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern for a decorative toy soldier designed to function as a sweet pot or small container. The finished piece features a charming soldier figure with distinct color-blocked sections representing different parts of a traditional military uniform, complete with a gathered top closure for holding small treats or items.

Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. Increases are created using the make-one method, which involves knitting into the back of the loop between two stitches to add stitches without visible holes. Decreases are worked using knit-two-together reductions to shape the piece. Color changes are incorporated throughout the design, with the yarn broken off and rejoined to create the distinct sections of the soldier's uniform. The piece is constructed as a single tube that is later stitched at the row ends to close the seams, and the final stitches are gathered tightly using the break-and-thread method to create a secure closure at the top.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch – the primary stitch throughout, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter stitch – mentioned in abbreviations as an alternative textural option, created by knitting every row for a ridged, bumpy finish
  • Knit-two-together decreases – used to reduce stitch counts and shape the soldier's form, particularly for the head and upper body sections
  • Make-one increases – worked into the back loop between stitches to add stitches and expand sections like the base and middle body
  • Purl-two-together decreases – used on wrong-side rows for seamless shaping

Materials

This project requires 3.25mm knitting needles and double knitting weight yarn in six colors: black, white, red, beige, yellow, and blue. Only small oddments of each color are needed, making this an excellent pattern for using up yarn scraps from other projects. A small amount of stuffing material is required to give the finished toy soldier its three-dimensional shape and structure.
