Product Description
This Toadstool Cottage makes a cute decoration or pincushion. The door, windows and details are embroidered onto the toadstool after knitting. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the toadstool is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Toadstool Cottage Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
The Toadstool Cottage is a charming knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry that functions as both a decorative piece and a functional pincushion. This beginner-friendly project creates a whimsical cottage structure featuring a distinctive toadstool design, making it an ideal choice for crafters new to knitting who want to create a finished, three-dimensional object.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern uses knitting as the primary craft method. The project is worked flat, meaning you knit back and forth on a pair of single-pointed knitting needles rather than working in the round. This flat construction method is particularly beginner-friendly as it eliminates the complexity of circular knitting techniques.
Key construction techniques include:
- Long tail cast on for creating the initial stitches
- Mattress stitch for seaming pieces together, which creates nearly invisible seams ideal for toy construction
- Gathering and securing stitches at the end, accomplished by cutting the yarn with a 30cm tail, threading it onto a darning needle, sewing through remaining stitches, and pulling tightly to close
- Embroidery details added after the main knitting is complete
Stitches Used
While the pattern details provided focus on construction methods rather than specific stitch abbreviations, the project employs fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for a beginner difficulty level. The flat knit construction and mattress stitch seaming form the foundation of this toy's structure.
Yarn and Materials
The Toadstool Cottage pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting, 8 ply, or light worsted weight). You will need yarn in four different color shades:
- White and Purple for knitting the main toadstool structure
- Green and Brown for embroidered details
The pattern requires only a few grammes of each yarn shade, making this an excellent project for using up yarn scraps. The photographed sample was created using Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn available in the shades White, Orchid Pink, Grass, and Walnut, demonstrating that acrylic yarns work beautifully for this project.
Additional materials needed include single-pointed knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn and a darning needle for seaming and embroidery work.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who are just starting their crafting journey. The flat knitting construction, straightforward seaming techniques, and simple embellishment methods create a manageable project that produces a satisfying three-dimensional result.
