*Note: *The gauge for this garment is for a single strand of yarn, not with yarn doubled. The result should be a lightweight fabric that is not open. The fabric is intended to be light so that when folded in half, it maintains drape. If you are not using the recommended yarn, or if your fabric is too open, consider going down a needle size, or 2 and knitting the next size up.
*Note: *The sample shown is size XS on a model who is a size M. If knit per your normal size, the cape will provide more coverage in the front and will have more ease overall in the cape portion itself.
The sample was knit in Swans Island Organic Washable DK. A substitute yarn is shown below.
To Grandma's House Adult Version Reversible Caplet
Project Overview
The To Grandma's House Adult Version, designed by Melissa Schaschwary, is a reversible knitted caplet inspired by the classic Red Riding Hood fairytale. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a whimsical yet sophisticated layering piece that features two distinct design sides—one gentle and sweet, the other bold and adventurous. The reversible construction allows the wearer to showcase either personality, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a reversible caplet with an attached hood, designed to drape elegantly over the shoulders. The caplet includes a fitted neckline and a hood that extends approximately 14.5 inches from the base of the neck. The garment is sized for adults in five different sizes ranging from extra-small to extra-large, with bust circumferences from 29 inches to 43 inches. The finished length from the base of the neck to the hem ranges from 15.5 to 18 inches depending on size, creating a short, shoulder-covering layer piece.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its reversible design and structured fit. The caplet is constructed using stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, which creates smooth, even fabric on both sides—essential for a reversible garment. The pattern utilizes circular knitting needles to work the piece in the round, allowing for seamless construction and the ability to easily incorporate the two-color design. The reversible nature of the caplet is achieved through careful color placement and construction methods that allow either side to be worn as the featured design.
The hood is an integral part of the design, knitted as part of the caplet structure. Finishing techniques include the use of a crochet hook for edging details, which adds definition and prevents curling along the edges. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including p2sso (pass 2 stitches over), indicating the inclusion of decreases that shape the garment and create its fitted silhouette.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch throughout the caplet, creating smooth fabric suitable for reversible wear
- Decreases – Including p2sso (pass 2 stitches over) for shaping the caplet and hood
- Crochet Finishing – Applied with a size I crochet hook for edge finishing and detail work
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Swans Island Organic Washable DK yarn, a high-quality, natural fiber option that is both durable and easy to care for. The DK (double knit) weight yarn is ideal for creating fabric with good drape and structure. Yardage requirements vary by size: sizes XS through XL require 5 to 8 skeins each of both the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC), with each skein containing 137 yards. The suggested colors are Pewter for the main color and Cayenne for the contrasting color, though crafters may substitute other DK-weight yarns of similar yardage.
The pattern specifies US 10.5/6.5mm circular knitting needles in a 32-inch (80 cm) length for the main construction, along with a size I crochet hook for finishing. The gauge is established at 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
