Product Description
My all time favorite band since forever has a song called “A fine blue line” that I kept hearing in my head while working on these socks. A recurring line in the chorus is “Time marches / rushes / races on ahead”. The socks come in three sizes with just a tiny little bit of stranded knitting, so if you’ve been wanting to give that technique a try, I hope to encourage you with this design! Many thanks to my tech editor Michelle Hazell and my test-knitters… Any remaining mistakes are mine.

Time's Racing on Ahead Socks by Tanja Luescher
What Is Being Made
Time's Racing on Ahead is a sock design created by independent designer Tanja Luescher. These socks are available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—with circumferences of 17.8 cm (7"), 20.7 cm (8"), and 23.7 cm (9.25") respectively. The design is inspired by the song "A Fine Blue Line," with the recurring lyrical theme of time rushing forward serving as creative motivation for the pattern. These are knitted socks designed to be worn with approximately 5–10% negative ease for an optimal fit.
Techniques Used
The primary technique featured in this sock design is stranded knitting, a colorwork method that involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows to create patterned designs. Tanja Luescher intentionally kept the stranded knitting element minimal and accessible, making this an ideal project for knitters who are new to colorwork techniques and want to build confidence with this method. The pattern is structured to increase stitch count before the colorwork section to account for gauge differences that naturally occur when working with multiple colors.
The socks are knitted in the round, a technique that creates seamless tubular fabric—the standard construction method for sock knitting. This approach eliminates the need for seaming and produces a smooth, comfortable garment.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch in the round, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for the sock. The blocked gauge is 27 stitches and 33 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch when worked in the round. The pattern incorporates colorwork sections using the stranded knitting technique, which requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously to build the design.
Materials
This design uses 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and durability for sock knitting. Knitters will need appropriate needles for working in the round at the specified gauge—typically double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop needles, depending on personal preference. The pattern notes that gauge may vary based on individual knitting tension, and the designer mentions being a loose knitter, suggesting that knitters should swatch and potentially adjust needle size accordingly.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters who are new to sock construction or colorwork. While the design introduces stranded knitting, the minimal colorwork sections and clear pattern structure support knitters in learning this technique in a manageable way. The pattern was tested by experienced test knitter linton and edited by tech editor Michelle Hazell to ensure clarity and accuracy for knitters of varying experience levels.
Pattern Format
Time's Racing on Ahead is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to the complete pattern instructions, stitch counts, and sizing information for all three sizes.
