Timeless Set Kids Cardigans Collection – Shawl Collared and Round Neck Cardigans by Jenny Watson

Designed by Jenny Watson and published as a downloadable PDF, the Timeless Set Kids Cardigans Collection features two classic children's cardigan designs worked in West Yorkshire Spinners Aire Valley Aran yarn. This pattern is aimed at intermediate knitters and delivers timeless, wardrobe-staple knitwear for children in a range of chest sizes from 51/56 cm (20/22 in) up to 71/76 cm (28/30 in), with actual finished measurements spanning approximately 68 cm to 86 cm (26¾ in to 34 in) across the chest.

The Two Designs at a Glance

The collection presents two distinct cardigan styles that share the same classic, structured aesthetic while offering different neckline finishes. Both are designed to be practical, durable, and enduringly stylish for children's everyday wear.

Design One – Timeless Shawl Collared Cardigan

The first design features a shawl collar, one of the most elegant and traditional neckline treatments in knitwear. A shawl collar wraps softly around the neckline and folds back on itself, creating a layered, cosy finish that adds warmth and a refined look to a child's cardigan. This style is particularly well suited to the structured drape and stitch definition offered by an Aran weight yarn.

Design Two – Timeless Round Neck Cardigan

The second design offers a round neck finish, a clean and versatile neckline that suits a wide range of children's outfits. The round neck cardigan is a perennial classic in children's knitwear, easy to layer and simple to wear. Like the shawl collared version, it is constructed to provide a neat, well-fitted finish across all the available sizes.

Techniques and Construction

Both cardigans in this collection are worked using a range of traditional hand knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The pattern includes the following construction methods and shaping techniques:

  • Flat knitting – pieces are worked back and forth in rows, with separate front, back, and sleeve panels that are seamed together for a classic, structured finish
  • Shaping techniques including increasing and decreasing to achieve the correct fit across the chest, armhole, and sleeve cap
  • Cable knitting – the pattern references a Cable Needle (CN) in its abbreviations, indicating that cable stitch panels are incorporated into the design, adding textural interest and a traditional Aran-style quality to the fabric
  • Sleeve construction with a defined sleeve length ranging from approximately 35 cm to 51 cm (13¾ in to 20 in) depending on size, shaped with increases along the sleeve seam
  • Make One (M1) increases for neat, invisible stitch additions during shaping
  • Seaming to join the knitted panels into a finished garment

Stitches Used

The pattern draws on a selection of foundational and decorative knitting stitches. These include:

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches – the building blocks of all knitted fabric
  • 1x1 Rib – worked over an odd number of stitches as a two-row repeat: Row 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to last stitch, K1; Row 2: P1, *K1, P1, repeat from * to end. This rib is used for cuffs, button bands, and hem edgings, providing elasticity and a neat finish
  • Cable stitches – worked with a cable needle to cross stitches over one another, creating the characteristic twisted rope or lattice textures associated with Aran-style knitwear
  • Slip stitches – both knitways (s1k) and purlways (s1p) are used in shaping and decorative details
  • Pass slipped
