Thumper the Bunny Rabbit Knitted Toy

What Is Being Made

Thumper the Bunny Rabbit is a beginner-friendly knitted toy designed by Andrew Lucas. This adorable stuffed bunny measures approximately 17 centimeters in height, making it an ideal small companion toy. The design uses simple knitting techniques to create a charming rabbit figure suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created entirely through knitting, making it accessible for beginners who have basic knitting skills and familiarity with fundamental stitches. The pattern guides you through constructing the toy in sections—body, shoulders, and head—which are then assembled and stuffed to create the finished three-dimensional form.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the toy, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted fabric
  • Garter stitch (gs) – A textured knit stitch created by knitting every row
  • Knit (k) – Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl (p) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination with knit rows for stocking stitch
  • Increases (inc and m1) – Techniques to add stitches and shape the toy, including increasing in every stitch to expand the body and making one by knitting into the back of the loop between stitches
  • Decreases (dec and k2 tog) – Methods to reduce stitches, such as knitting two stitches together to shape the shoulders
  • Slip, knit, pass slip stitch over (skpo) – A decrease technique for refined shaping
  • Bind and tie (B and T) – A finishing method using a tapestry needle to thread wool through stitches, draw them up, and secure the ends

Materials Required

Creating Thumper requires the following materials:

  • Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
  • Yarn: Double knitting wool in multiple colors—grey (for the main body), lemon, light pink, pink, black, and white (for details such as eyes, nose, and inner ears)
  • Stuffing: A small amount of polyester or fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed toy and give it shape and dimension
  • Additional tools: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling the toy pieces

Construction Overview

The toy is constructed in distinct sections. The body begins by casting on 25 stitches in grey wool, then increasing in every stitch to create 50 stitches for the wider body section. After working 21 rows in stocking stitch, the shoulders are shaped by knitting two stitches together to reduce back to 25 stitches. The head section follows, with increases worked to expand to 37 stitches, then continued in stocking stitch for 17 rows before the pattern continues with additional shaping. This modular approach makes the pattern manageable for beginners while creating a well-proportioned toy.
