Throws & Cushions in King Cole Quartz Super Chunky – Pattern 5643

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from King Cole presents a collection of cosy home accessories worked in King Cole Quartz Super Chunky yarn. The pattern covers four projects in total: a Double Moss Stitch Throw, a Garter Stitch Throw, a Double Moss Stitch Cushion, and a Garter Stitch Cushion. Rated as intermediate in difficulty, the designs are an excellent way to build confidence with texture stitches while producing striking, tactile results on large needles. Each purchase of this pattern contributes a donation to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Yarn & Needles

All four projects are knitted using King Cole Quartz Super Chunky, a super chunky weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a beautifully thick, luxurious fabric. The recommended needle size throughout is 10mm knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct tension. Working to the stated tension is emphasised as essential for achieving the correct dimensions in the finished pieces.

Tension

The pattern specifies two tension measurements depending on the stitch pattern in use:

  • Double Moss Stitch: 10 stitches and 14 rows to 10cm (4 inches) using 10mm needles
  • Garter Stitch: 10 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm (4 inches) using 10mm needles

As is standard practice in knitting, if fewer stitches than stated are achieved over 10cm, a finer needle should be used; if more stitches are achieved, a larger needle is required.

Double Moss Stitch Throw

The Double Moss Stitch Throw is a generously sized blanket cast on with 83 stitches and worked to approximately 160cm in length. It is an impressive statement piece for a sofa or bed.

Techniques & Stitches

The throw is constructed using a combination of a slip stitch selvedge and Double Moss Stitch. The slip stitch at the beginning of every row creates a neat, self-finishing edge that eliminates the need for additional border work. Double Moss Stitch — sometimes called Double Seed Stitch — is a classic reversible texture stitch that produces a richly bumpy, fabric-like surface. It is worked over a four-row repeat:

  • Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, *K1, P1; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, K2
  • Row 2: Slip 1, P1, *K1, P1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1
  • Row 3: Slip 1, *P1, K1; repeat from * to end
  • Row 4: Slip 1, K1, *P1, K1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1

This four-row sequence is repeated throughout until the throw reaches the required length, ending on a 4th pattern row before casting off in pattern. The resulting fabric is thick, reversible, and highly textured — ideal for a throw that will be seen from both sides.

Double Moss Stitch Cushion

The Double Moss Stitch Cushion uses the same stitch pattern as the throw, making the two pieces a natural pairing for a coordinated home décor set. The cushion front and back are worked separately and the piece is worked until it measures approximately 41cm, ending on a 4th pattern row.

Techniques & Stitches

  • Double Moss Stitch worked over a four-row repeat, identical to the throw
  • Slip stitch selvedge for neat edges
  • Cast off in pattern for a tidy, consistent finish

Making Up

The cushion is assembled by joining three seams. It is then pinned out to its actual size and left under a damp cloth for 24 hours — a standard blocking technique that
