Product Description

This sock pattern is inspired by (but not an exact representation of) the armour worn by Thorin Oakenshield in the recently released Hobbit movies from New Line Cinemas.

It's a heavily cabled sock with an all-over pattern that absolutely eats yarn, so plan ahead and have extra yardage! That said, I included a wider range of sizing options than I usually do because I think this would make an attractive sock for men or women, teens or adults. Be aware, however, if you are working on an extra-large sock, to have plenty of extra yarn. I would recommend (depending on the length of the foot and leg portions of the sock) between 450 and 500 yards of yarn for the extra-large size.

I hope you enjoy it! :D

Thorin Oakenshield Cabled Socks by Claire Ellen

What Is Being Made

The Thorin pattern creates a pair of cabled socks inspired by the armored shirt worn by Thorin Oakenshield in the recent Hobbit films. This is an all-over cabled sock design suitable for both men and women, offered in a generous range of sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large. The Small size is appropriate for pre-teen feet, making this pattern versatile across multiple wearers. The extensive cabling throughout the sock creates a distinctive, textured appearance reminiscent of chainmail or armor plating.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This advanced knitting project employs cable knitting as its primary decorative technique. The all-over cabled pattern means cables are worked continuously throughout the sock rather than in isolated sections, creating a cohesive armored aesthetic. Knitters have the option to use a cable needle for traditional cable crossings or to cable without a needle using the slip-off method, depending on their skill level and preference.

The pattern is written for double-pointed needles (DPNs) but accommodates magic loop knitters as well. Magic loop knitters can easily adapt the pattern by using stitch markers to note needle placements, making this design accessible to knitters who prefer the magic loop method over traditional DPNs.

An important consideration: the extensive cabling reduces the elasticity of the finished sock compared to standard sock patterns. Designers recommend sizing up if there is any doubt about fit, as the cables create a less stretchy fabric than typical sock yarn construction.

Stitches Used

The pattern centers on cable stitches worked in an all-over repeat throughout the sock. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, cable work typically involves knit stitches crossed over one another to create the twisted, rope-like texture that evokes the appearance of armor. The foundational structure uses standard sock construction stitches to shape the leg, heel, and foot.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern requires approximately 360 yards of sock yarn for Small size, 380 yards for Medium, 410 yards for Large, and 450 yards for Extra-Large. Standard sock yarn weight is appropriate for this project, providing the necessary durability and elasticity for a wearable garment despite the cabling's impact on stretch.

Additional materials include a cable needle (or the ability to cable without one), scissors, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing.

Needles

This pattern calls for US 1 (2.25mm) sock needles. These small-gauge needles are standard for sock knitting and work with the sock yarn weight to create a tight, durable fabric suitable for foot wear. The pattern accommodates both double-pointed needle (DPN) sets and magic loop circular needle techniques.

Skill Level

Rated as Intermediate to Advanced, this pattern is best suited for knitters with solid experience in cable work and sock construction. The all-over cabling requires consistent tension and cable technique throughout, and the reduced elasticity demands careful attention to sizing and fit. Knitters new to cables or sock knitting may find this pattern challenging, though experienced cabled-project knitters should find it manageable.
