Product Description

In loving memory of Karrie Steinmetz, Knitpurlgurl, who was a big inspiration to me and getting my designs out there. When I first saw this flower motive pattern it was love at first sight. It reminds me of little thistles, Scotland's floral emblem, and when knitted in a long row, I believe they have a majestic look. This shawl is dedicated to my good Scottish friend, Julie, and her royal thistles. It is knit from the bottom up starting and ending with lace which is patterned on both right and wrong sides. In between the two lace Patterns stockinette stitch is knit using decreases and short rows to create a delicate crescent shape that gently rests on your shoulders. The pattern is free if you buy 2 skeins of Skein Silk/Cashmere Lace from [Yarn Over Berlin.][1]

Thistles Lace Shawl by Kimberly Gintar

What is Being Made

Thistles is a crescent-shaped lace shawl designed by independent knitter Kimberly Gintar. This intermediate-level knitting project features a delicate thistle flower motif pattern inspired by Scotland's national floral emblem. The finished shawl measures approximately 22 inches (56 cm) deep and 72 inches (183 cm) wide, making it a generous wrap that gently rests on the shoulders. The design is dedicated to the designer's Scottish friend Julie and her royal thistles.

Construction Method and Techniques

Thistles is knit from the bottom up, beginning and ending with lace patterning. The shawl employs several advanced shaping techniques to achieve its signature crescent silhouette. Between the two lace pattern sections, stockinette stitch forms the body of the shawl, with decreases and short rows strategically placed to create the delicate curved shape. The lace patterning is worked on both right and wrong sides, adding visual interest and complexity to the finished fabric.

Stitches Used

  • Lace knitting – forms the decorative thistle flower motif on both the right and wrong sides of the fabric
  • Stockinette stitch – creates the smooth body section between the lace patterns
  • Decreases – used throughout to shape the crescent form
  • Short rows – employed to create the gentle curve and dimensional shaping

Materials Required

Yarn: Approximately 800 yards (731.5 meters) of lace weight yarn. The pattern sample was worked in Skein Silk/Cashmere Lace in the Barley colorway, a luxurious blend suitable for delicate lace shawls.

Needles: Two sizes of US circular needles are required. A 32-inch or longer US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle is used for the cast-on, and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles are used for the main body of the shawl. The longer needle length accommodates the growing width of the shawl as stitches are added.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with experience in lace knitting techniques, shaping methods, and reading complex stitch patterns. Familiarity with working lace on both sides of the fabric and managing short-row shaping is recommended.
