The Thistle Market Bag is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Two of Wands. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a practical, stylish market bag suitable for everyday use. The design combines functional construction with decorative lace detailing, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic stockinette stitch.
This pattern creates a structured market bag with the following finished dimensions: 13 inches (33 centimeters) in width, 16 inches (41 centimeters) in length, and a strap length of 20 inches (51 centimeters). The bag is designed to be spacious enough for carrying groceries, yarn, or other items while maintaining a refined appearance suitable for various occasions.
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch being worked: 19 stitches plus 23 rows equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, and 15 stitches plus 24 rounds equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) in lace stitch. These measurements ensure the finished bag meets the intended dimensions and drapes appropriately.
The Thistle Market Bag incorporates several knitting techniques that make it suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary construction method involves working in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous pattern work.
Lace Stitch Pattern: The decorative element of this bag features a lace stitch worked in a multiple of 6 stitches. The lace pattern repeats over 4 rounds and creates an open, airy texture that contrasts beautifully with solid stockinette sections. The lace sequence is as follows:
Core Techniques: The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including knit stitches, purl stitches, yarn overs for creating decorative eyelet holes, and decrease methods such as knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip-slip-knit (SSK). The S2KP decrease is a centered double decrease that creates a balanced visual effect in the lace pattern.
The bag is constructed using circular needles to work in the round, which is a hallmark of seamless knitting. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric. The pattern uses double pointed needles for sections where the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles, a common technique in bag construction.
MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton is a natural fiber yarn ideal for market bags. Cotton provides excellent durability, breathability, and structure—essential qualities for a bag that will hold substantial weight. The sport weight classification offers a balance between fabric density and drape, creating a bag that is sturdy enough for practical use while remaining elegant. The Mid Grey color (301) is a versatile neutral that complements various styles and hides wear well.
This intermediate project provides excellent opportunities to develop skills in lace knitting, circular needle techniques, and gauge management. Knitters will practice reading lace charts, managing yarn overs and decreases, and maintaining consistent tension while working decorative stitch
