Product Description
This hat is named for Themisto, one of the many moons of Jupiter. In Greek mythology, Themisto was daughter of a river god and one of Zeus’ many lovers. Solid cables twine along a striped background of reverse stockinette, creating an interesting hat and an engaging project.
This hat is worked from the bottom up in the round with two colors. The simple colorwork only requires one color per row, no stranding! Stripes and slipped stitches are all it takes. Both written and charted instructions are included.

What is Being Made
Themisto is an intermediate-level knitted hat named after one of Jupiter's moons. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a fitted hat available in four sizes: XS (16 inches/40.5 cm), S (17.75 inches/45 cm), M (19.5 inches/49.5 cm), and L (21.25 inches/52.5 cm) circumference. The hat is designed to fit head circumferences ranging from 16 to 22+ inches (40.5 to 56+ cm), with the sample shown in size M on a 21-inch (53.5 cm) head. This is a complete downloadable PDF pattern suitable for knitters with intermediate skill levels.
Design and Visual Elements
The Themisto hat features a striking combination of textural elements that create visual interest throughout the project. Solid cables twine along a striped background of reverse stockinette stitch, producing a sophisticated contrast between the raised cable motifs and the recessed reverse stockinette sections. This interplay of texture and stitch pattern makes the hat both visually engaging and an interesting knitting project for intermediate crafters.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch - The primary stitch structure, worked in the round to create a smooth fabric base
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch - Used as the striped background, creating a recessed texture that contrasts with the cables
- Cable Stitches - Solid cables are twisted throughout the hat design, adding dimensional texture and visual complexity
- Stripes - Color work created through alternating rows of the main color and contrast color, worked in stockinette and reverse stockinette combinations
- In-the-Round Knitting - The hat is constructed using circular needles or double-point needles, allowing for seamless construction
Yarn and Materials
The Themisto hat pattern calls for Sunshine Yarns Merino Worsted, a 100% Superwash Merino yarn with 175 yards per 100-gram skein. The pattern uses two colors: Dark Charcoal as the main color (MC), requiring approximately 80 to 110 yards depending on size, and Red Zinger as the contrast color (CC), requiring approximately 50 to 80 yards depending on size.
Needles and Tools
Knitters will need US6 (4mm) and US8 (5mm) circular needles in 16-inch length, or longer circulars for the magic loop method. Double-point needles are also suitable for construction. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 27 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using US8 (5mm) needles or the size needed to obtain proper gauge.
Pattern Difficulty
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Themisto hat requires knitters to be comfortable with cable stitches, working in the round with circular needles or double-point needles, managing two-color knitting, and maintaining consistent gauge. The combination of cables and reverse stockinette striping provides an engaging project that builds skills while creating a wearable finished hat.
