What Is Being Made

Their Favorite Hat is a classic knitted beanie designed by Susan Kennedy of Pretty Peaceful. This versatile hat is sized to fit children through adults, with a finished height of approximately 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) and a diameter of about 19 inches (48 cm). The design creates a comfortable, everyday hat suitable for various ages and head sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly knitting project employs fundamental techniques that make it an excellent introduction to hat construction. The pattern begins with casting on stitches and joining them in the round, a core skill for circular knitting. The hat utilizes the knit 1, purl 1 ribbing technique for the main body, which creates a stretchy, textured fabric that conforms nicely to the head. The pattern then transitions to decreasing stitches using the knit 2 together decrease method to shape the crown of the hat, gradually reducing the stitch count from 60 stitches down to 15 stitches. The final closure involves threading the yarn tail through the remaining stitches to complete the top of the hat.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the knitted fabric
  • Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
  • Knit 2 together (K2tog) – a decrease stitch used to reduce stitch count and shape the hat crown
  • Knit 1, purl 1 ribbing (1x1 rib) – the primary stitch pattern creating the textured body of the hat over 25 rounds

Materials and Tools

This project requires super bulky weight yarn, with approximately 85 yards (78 meters) needed to complete the hat. The pattern calls for 10 mm (size 15) needles, specifically one 16- or 18-inch (40.5–46 cm) long circular needle for the main body and 3 double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases when the stitch count becomes too small for the circular needle. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and an optional stitch marker to track the beginning of each round. The gauge is 13 stitches and 14 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.
