Product Description

We have tested this on afe 6 and up, it is a forgiving pattern for size. It is made to sit ABOVE the ears.
The Xanadu Cadet Hat by SICK 'LIL MONKEYS
Project Overview
The Xanadu Cadet Hat is an advanced-level crochet design created by SICK 'LIL MONKEYS. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a structured cadet-style hat suitable for children approximately age 6 through adults. The finished hat features a 19-inch diameter base that stretches to accommodate up to 23 inches, with a 6-inch depth designed to sit above the ear, creating an intentionally one-size-fits-all garment.
Materials and Tools Required
This project requires the following materials and supplies:
- Yarn: 2 skeins of cotton DK weight yarn, such as Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton
- Hook: Size H (8/5.0MM) crochet hook
- Notions: Metal large eye needle and measuring tape
- Additional: Scissors for finishing
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Xanadu Cadet Hat employs advanced crochet techniques that require careful attention to stitch placement and construction methods. The pattern utilizes a specialized pleating technique that involves working double crochet stitches in the back ridge of stitches, turning, then working double crochet stitches in the back loop only of the same stitches, and turning again before working in the front loop only. This multi-directional approach creates dimensional texture and structure characteristic of advanced crochet design.
Core stitches used throughout the pattern include:
- CH (Chain): Foundation stitch for beginning the project
- SL ST (Slip Stitch): Used for joining rounds and connecting stitches
- SC (Single Crochet): Basic stitch providing tight, dense fabric
- SC INC (Single Crochet Increase): For expanding stitch counts
- SC DEC (Single Crochet Decrease): For reducing stitch counts and shaping
- HDC (Half Double Crochet): Medium-height stitch for varied texture
- DC (Double Crochet): Taller stitch used extensively in pleating sections
- DC DEC (Double Crochet Decrease): For shaping and tapering
Advanced Construction Methods
The pattern incorporates loop-specific working techniques to achieve its structured appearance. Abbreviations FLO (Front Loop Only) and BLO (Back Loop Only) indicate that stitches are worked into only the front or back loops of previous stitches rather than under both loops, creating ridged effects and directional texture. The pattern also references WS (Wrong Side) construction, indicating that shaping occurs on both sides of the work.
The distinctive pleating technique is central to the hat's design, creating a cadet-style aesthetic through strategic stitch placement and directional changes. This advanced approach requires precision and understanding of how stitch manipulation affects the final garment structure.
Gauge and Sizing Information
Proper gauge is critical for this project's success. The recommended gauge is 2 rows by 8 double crochet stitches measuring 2 inches by 2 inches when worked with the specified yarn and hook size. The pattern explicitly emphasizes checking gauge before beginning, as accurate gauge ensures the finished hat achieves its intended one-size-fits-all dimensions and proper fit above the ear.
This advanced crochet pattern is ideal for experienced crafters seeking a structured, dimensional hat project with professional-level construction techniques.
