The Wheat Cabled Scarf by Bonnie Bay Crochet

What is Being Made

The Wheat Cabled Scarf is a versatile accessory designed for both men and women. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished scarf measuring approximately 53 inches long by 6 inches wide, making it an ideal length and width for everyday wear. The design showcases a distinctive large wheat cable as its focal point, featuring Bonnie Bay Crochet's unique interpretation of this classic textured stitch.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses crochet as the primary craft method. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches. The design incorporates specialized techniques including working with cable stitches and textured stitch patterns that create visual depth and dimension throughout the scarf.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Wheat Cabled Scarf employs two special stitches that define its appearance:

  • Large Wheat Cable: The signature stitch of this design, worked in Bonnie Bay Crochet's distinctive style to create bold, dimensional texture
  • Wattle Stitch: A complementary textured stitch used throughout the pattern for added visual interest
  • Double Crochet Ribbing: Used in rows 1-5 of the pattern to establish the foundation and structure of the scarf

Materials and Tools

Yarn Weight: This pattern uses worsted weight yarn. The video tutorial demonstrates the scarf worked in Outlaw Bohemia Gothic, requiring 2 skeins (45% Polwarth, 45% Alpaca, 10% Possum, 200 meters/219 yards per 100 gram skein).

Yarn Substitutes: If Outlaw Bohemia Gothic is unavailable, excellent substitute options include:

  • 3 skeins of Red Heart Chic Sheep (100% wool, 186 yards/170 meters per 3.5 ounce/100 gram skein)
  • 2 skeins of Cascade Elysian (60% Merino wool, 40% acrylic, 219 yards/200 meters per 3.5 ounce/100 gram skein)

Hook and Notions: The pattern calls for an I hook (9/5.50 mm). Additional notions needed are minimal: a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge Information

The gauge for this pattern, measured in double crochet ribbing across rows 1-5, is 17 stitches = 4 inches and 5 rows = 2 inches. Checking gauge before beginning is recommended to ensure the finished scarf dimensions match the intended 53" x 6" size.

Pattern Support

This downloadable PDF pattern includes complete video tutorials for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters, providing step-by-step guidance through the construction process and helping crocheters master the large wheat cable technique.

Very cute, detailed and inexpensive.

I’ve made 4 of these scarves so far. 2 soft white, 1 charcoal gray and 1 mustard colored. They all came turned out beautifully. I just finished one for my granddaughter this morning, Christmas, 10 minutes before everyone got here. I’ve worked with cables for several years, but If you haven’t worked cables before, it would be a bit tricky to learn, but after the first few it’s a lot of fun! I’ll be using this pattern again and again.

Pleased Customer

Have never done cable crochet. This pattern was easy to follow while I'm beginning to learn cabling. Completed the scarf and very pleased.
