The Heartland Dollies by Jo Sharp
What Is Being Made
The Heartland Dollies is a knitting pattern collection designed by Jo Sharp for creating dolls and doll accessories. This advanced-level project combines traditional knitting techniques with creative design to produce charming handmade dolls suitable for collectors and gift-giving.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is executed entirely through knitting, the primary craft method. Knitting involves interlocking loops of yarn using two needles to create fabric from a single continuous strand. The pattern also references crochet techniques for certain finishing elements, providing versatility for crafters familiar with both needle and hook methods.
Stitches and Knitting Techniques Used
The Heartland Dollies pattern employs a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:
- Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches — the foundational stitches that form the basis of all knitted fabric
- Stocking Stitch (st st) — a classic combination of knit and purl rows creating a smooth, uniform fabric ideal for doll bodies and garments
- Increases — including Kfb (knit into front and back), Pbf (purl into front and back), and m1 (make 1) techniques to add stitches for shaping
- Decreases — techniques such as skpsso (slip, knit, pass slip stitch over) and psso (pass slip stitch over) to reduce stitches for tailoring
- Cable techniques — using a cable needle (cn) for twisted, textured details
- Yarn manipulation stitches — including yarn forward (yf), yarn back (yb), and yarn round needle (yrn) for creating decorative effects
- Through-the-back-loop variations — Kb1 and tbl stitches for refined shaping
Crochet abbreviations referenced include chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half treble (htr), and double treble (dbl) for edgings or embellishments on the dolls.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Heartland Dollies pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. The recommended yarn is Jo Sharp Classic DK Wool, a quality wool yarn that offers durability and traditional aesthetic appropriate for heirloom-quality dolls. DK weight yarn works efficiently with standard knitting needles, allowing for detailed work while maintaining reasonable project timelines.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, indicating it is best suited for experienced knitters. The complexity likely stems from the combination of shaping techniques, stitch variations, and the precision required to create well-proportioned doll features and garments. Crafters should be comfortable with reading pattern abbreviations, managing multiple stitch types, and executing increases and decreases with accuracy.
Pattern Format
The Heartland Dollies is provided as a downloadable PDF, offering convenient digital access to complete pattern instructions, abbreviation guides, and any accompanying charts or diagrams needed for successful completion of the project.
