The Gaia Bralette: Crochet Top Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Gaia Bralette is a crocheted bralette top designed by Abby Davies of Calm Homemade. This garment is a fitted, supportive upper body piece created using intermediate-level crochet techniques. The bralette offers a stylish, handmade alternative to store-bought intimates and can be customized in various colors and yarn weights to suit individual preferences and sizing needs.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to create structure and visual interest in the finished garment. The design incorporates textured stitching methods that provide both aesthetic appeal and functional support for the bralette construction.

  • Front Post Double Crochet (FP DC): A key technique in this pattern where the yarn is inserted behind the double crochet stitches in the previous row. This creates a raised, dimensional texture that adds visual depth and structural integrity to the piece.
  • Standard stitch work: The pattern builds on foundational crochet skills to create the overall shape and fit of the bralette.
  • Shaping techniques: Strategic increases and decreases are used to achieve the fitted silhouette appropriate for a bralette top.

Stitches Used

The Gaia Bralette pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches, all worked in US terminology:

  • Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used for joining rounds and connecting sections of the garment.
  • Chain (CH): Forms the foundation and base of the pattern. Note that ch 3 counts as a double crochet in this pattern.
  • Single Crochet (SC): Provides a tight, dense fabric suitable for fitted garment construction.
  • Double Crochet (DC): Creates a more open fabric with good drape while maintaining structure.
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC): Offers a medium-weight stitch; ch 2 counts as a half double crochet in this pattern.
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FP DC): The signature textured stitch that defines much of the visual character of the Gaia Bralette.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Gaia Bralette pattern is designed to be worked with aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and creates a fabric with good structure and drape. This yarn weight is ideal for fitted garments like bralettes, as it offers enough body to maintain shape while remaining comfortable against the skin.

Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for aran weight yarn, though the specific hook size should be referenced in the full pattern details. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, making it convenient for digital access and printing.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex stitch techniques and garment shaping. The use of front post double crochet and the fitted construction of a bralette require some experience, but the step-by-step guidance and instructional photos included in the pattern support successful completion.

Pattern Features and Instructions

The downloadable PDF includes comprehensive instructional support for makers. The pattern features step-by-step photographs on pages 5-7 that visually demonstrate key techniques, particularly the front post double crochet stitch and other construction methods. Clear abbreviations and US crochet terminology are provided throughout, and the pattern uses standard repeat notation (indicated by asterisks) to streamline instructions for sections that are worked multiple times.

This pattern is designed for personal use only and is the intellectual property of designer Abby Davies. Creators are encouraged to share their finished projects on social media while crediting @calm.homemade and the designer.
