Product Description
This vest was designed to take advantage of the many colours available from Shelridge Yarns. Two strands of yarn are held together, one colour is switched out at a time to create the colour transitions.
The fit is very forgiving and will flatter many body shapes. The classic vest back gives the garment structure, while the front is constructed as a simple straight piece of knitting with angled edges creating points at the front. The colour changes create a strong, slimming vertical line on the front of the body. The front edges fold back into a shawl collar. The simple textured stitch pattern lays flat and creates a gentle transition at each colour change, subtly blending the shades.
It's an updated version of The Prudence Crowley Vest with a different stitch pattern. The pattern uses simple reverse stocking stitch borders on the armholes and bottom edges to allow for easy finishing with multiple yarn ends
The Deborah Beresford Vest by Robin Hunter
What Is Being Made
The Deborah Beresford Vest is a sophisticated sleeveless garment designed by Robin Hunter as part of the waistcoats project. This knitted vest features a classic structured back paired with a creatively designed front that showcases multiple yarn colours in a striking vertical arrangement. The front edges fold back to create an elegant shawl collar, making this piece both a practical layering option and a statement accessory. The vest is engineered to flatter many body shapes with its forgiving fit, while the strategic colour placement creates a slimming visual effect.
Design Features and Construction
The Deborah Beresford Vest demonstrates thoughtful garment architecture that balances structure with visual interest. The back is constructed using classic vest shaping to provide essential structure and support to the garment. The front is built as a simple straight piece of knitting with carefully angled edges that create distinctive points at the front opening. This straightforward construction method keeps the knitting process manageable while achieving a sophisticated finished look.
The colour work is a defining element of this design. Multiple colours from Shelridge Yarns are incorporated to create strong, slimming vertical lines across the front of the body. Rather than using complex colour-work techniques, the colours are changed strategically throughout the knitting to build these visual effects naturally.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Reverse stocking stitch – Used as a textured stitch pattern throughout the garment. This simple textured stitch lays flat and creates gentle transitions at each colour change, subtly blending the different yarn shades together.
- Reverse stocking stitch borders – Applied to the armholes and bottom edges to facilitate easy finishing and accommodate multiple yarn ends
- Long tail cast on – The foundational technique for beginning the knitting
- Knit and purl stitches – The fundamental stitches that form the fabric
- Decreases and increases – Used to shape the angled front edges and create the pointed details at the front opening
- Colour changes – Incorporated throughout the pattern to build the vertical striping effect and create visual interest
