Product Description
In my country, Australia, summers are HOT! You can forget about wearing short sleeve wool tops - cooler fibers are required! Linen is a beautiful, drapey fibre that is cool and looks stylish at any time of the day. Hence, for The Coolah Top, I have chosen a lace weight linen to create a top you would be comfortable in at all times of the day.
The top is worked in garter stitch from the bottom up and in the round to the armholes. The body is shaped so that it is wider over the hips, decreasing slightly to the waist. The front and back are then separated and worked separately back and forward to the shoulders. After shaping, the shoulders are joined using the three needle bind off.
The lace panel is very simple, with the lace worked on the Right Side only. Accordingly, this garment is suitable for an adventurous beginner.
Our Yarn - Katia Lino 100%, colourways 9, 28 and 17.
The Coolah Top by Catherine Rein
What Is Being Made
The Coolah Top is a knitted summer garment designed for warm-weather wear. Created by designer Catherine Rein and published by The Cable & Lace Co., this top is engineered specifically for hot climates, with particular consideration for Australian summer conditions. The garment combines practical cooling properties with stylish, versatile design suitable for daytime wear.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for lace weight linen yarn, chosen for its exceptional cooling and moisture-wicking properties. Linen fiber provides natural breathability and drapey qualities that keep the wearer comfortable in high temperatures. The pattern includes blocked length measurements to accommodate knitters who may substitute alternative yarns for linen, allowing for customization based on fiber choice and desired fit.
Construction Technique
The Coolah Top employs a bottom-up construction method worked in the round to the armholes. This approach creates a seamless body section that provides comfort and ease of wear. The garment features strategic shaping designed to accommodate body proportions: the body is wider across the hip area and decreases slightly toward the waist, creating a flattering silhouette. Once the armholes are reached, the front and back sections are separated and worked flat in back-and-forth rows to complete the shoulder shaping and neckline.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the body of the garment, creating a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner level pattern, The Coolah Top is accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch work and logical shaping make it an ideal project for developing foundational garment-making skills.
