The Clown Kids Amigurumi by BabyCrochetDesigns

What Is Being Made

The Clown Kids is a downloadable crochet pattern for creating two adorable clown character dolls named Bobo and Blossom. These amigurumi-style toys are crocheted as three-dimensional stuffed figures with distinct clown personalities, featuring colorful details and playful proportions. The dolls are designed to be charming handmade toys suitable for children or as decorative pieces.

Construction Method

This pattern employs an efficient construction technique where the dolls are crocheted largely as one continuous piece. The legs and arms are crocheted directly onto the body, then the work continues seamlessly up to the neck and head sections. This integrated approach minimizes seaming and creates a sturdy, well-constructed toy. The only pieces requiring hand-sewing are the hair and decorative trimmings, which are sewn on after the main body is complete.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Single Crochet (sc) – The foundational stitch used throughout the pattern for creating dense, tight fabric suitable for amigurumi construction
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Used for sections requiring slightly more height and drape than single crochet
  • Double Crochet (dc) – Employed for areas needing additional height and texture variation
  • Treble Crochet (tc) – Incorporated for specific textural elements and design details
  • Invisible Decrease (dec) – A shaping technique used to seamlessly decrease stitches while maintaining the amigurumi's smooth appearance
  • Increase (inc) – Used to expand sections and create the rounded, dimensional shapes characteristic of amigurumi dolls
  • Bobble Stitch (bs) – A decorative stitch created by working multiple yarn overs and loops, then pulling through all stitches at once, used for textured embellishments
  • Magic Circle (mc) – The starting technique for creating seamless, centered circles at the beginning of the pattern
  • Back Loops Only (blo) – A selective loop technique that creates ridged texture when working through only the back loop of stitches
  • Front Loops Only (flo) – Working through only the front loop to create alternative texture and construction options

Materials Required

This pattern uses DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates nicely detailed amigurumi with good stitch definition. You will need approximately 40 grams of skin-tone colored yarn for the body sections and 60 grams of contrasting colors for the clown costume details, hair, and decorative trimmings. Two crochet hooks are required: a 2.5mm hook for the main body construction and a 1.5mm hook for finer detail work and smaller sections.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and multi-color construction. The integrated body construction and variety of stitches used require comfort with amigurumi fundamentals and the ability to follow detailed stitch sequences.

Pattern Format

The Clown Kids is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern written in English using US crochet terminology, with helpful abbreviation conversions to UK terms included throughout for international crocheters. This format allows for easy reference while working and can be printed for convenient pattern following.
