Product Description
Reminiscent of pixie hoods my mum used to make and wear , the Audrey Pixie Hood is named in her honour . I've used Bendigo Woollen Mills 10 ply Luxury in Australia . This bonnet is crocheted in one piece then seamed before added a chin strap and button . UK crochet terms are used in the PDF . The pattern is written in three sizes :- small , medium and large to fit newborn onwards . These pixie hoods are great because they stay on the baby’s head better than beanies
The Audrey Pixiehood Crocheted
What is Being Made
The Audrey Pixiehood is a charming crocheted pixie hood designed by TigsTogs, named in honour of the designer's mother Audrey who wore similar styles. This is a beginner-friendly hat project that creates a cozy, vintage-inspired pixie hood suitable for babies and toddlers. The design is worked in one continuous piece before seaming and finishing with a chin strap and button closure.
Techniques Used
This pixie hood is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques that make it an excellent project for those new to the craft. The garment is crocheted as a single piece, which simplifies the construction process and minimizes the number of seams required. Once the main body is complete, pieces are seamed together to form the hood shape. The finishing involves attaching a functional chin strap and a small button, adding both practicality and charm to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes UK crochet terms throughout, keeping the stitch vocabulary accessible for beginners. The primary stitches employed include:
- Chain stitch – used to create the foundation and throughout the pattern
- Double crochet – a fundamental short stitch that forms the main fabric
- Treble – a taller stitch that adds texture and drape
- Sedge stitch pattern – a textured stitch pattern used in the construction
Materials
The Audrey Pixiehood is designed to be made from Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 10 ply yarn in an aran weight, which provides excellent warmth and structure for a baby hat. One 200g ball of yarn is sufficient to complete one pixie hood in any of the three available sizes. A 5.00 mm crochet hook is required for working with this yarn weight. Additional finishing materials include one small button, a yarn needle, and thread to match the button for secure attachment.
Sizing and Measurements
The pattern is offered in three sizes to accommodate different ages:
- Small: 15 x 17 cm (newborn to six months)
- Medium: 18 x 19 cm (six to 18 months)
- Large: 20 x 22 cm (18 months to 4 years)
These measurements are taken when the hood is folded to join the seams, providing a reference for the finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, The Audrey Pixiehood uses only basic crochet stitches and straightforward construction methods. The pattern is designed to be accessible to those just starting their crochet journey, though the designer offers support for anyone needing assistance with the instructions or techniques.
