Tendril Shawl by Carmen Heffernan

Project Overview

The Tendril Shawl is an asymmetric lace shawl designed by Carmen Heffernan as a beautiful, efficient crochet project. This downloadable PDF pattern is crafted using only one skein of fingering weight yarn, making it an excellent choice for showcasing a precious or indie-dyed yarn. The finished shawl requires minimal finishing work with only 2 ends to weave in, streamlining the completion process.

Finished Dimensions

When blocked, the Tendril Shawl measures 70 inches (178 centimeters) along its longest length and 32 inches (82 centimeters) on the shortest side border, creating an elegant asymmetric silhouette suitable for layering or draping.

Skill Level and Techniques

Rated as an Easy to Intermediate skill level, the Tendril Shawl uses only basic crochet stitches, though some concentration is required until the row increases are established. This makes it an accessible project for crocheters looking to expand their skills without overwhelming complexity.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates fundamental crochet stitches presented in US crochet terminology:

  • dc (double crochet) – the primary stitch providing structure
  • dc3tog (double crochet 3 together) – a decrease stitch creating shaping
  • tr (treble crochet) – adding height and lace elements

Materials and Yarn Weight

The Tendril Shawl is designed for fingering weight yarn, specifically requiring approximately 400 meters (366 meters minimum) of yarn. The pattern includes a sample created with 4 Ply fingering weight yarn composed of 60% Superwash Merino, 20% Yak, and 20% Silk fiber content from My Crochet Makes Hand Dyed Yarn. However, you can substitute any fingering weight yarn or yarn weight of your choice with an appropriately matched crochet hook.

Tools Required

A 4mm crochet hook is recommended for the pictured sample. When using alternative yarn weights, select a hook size appropriate for your chosen yarn to achieve proper drape and finished dimensions.

Pattern Format and Resources

This downloadable PDF pattern includes a comprehensive crochet chart on a single page for convenient printing and reference during construction. The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout, ensuring clarity for crocheters familiar with American crochet conventions. The PDF spans 5 pages total, providing complete instructions and visual guidance.

Design Characteristics

The asymmetric lace construction of the Tendril Shawl creates visual interest through strategic increases and decreases, resulting in a garment that drapes beautifully when worn. The lace pattern allows the yarn's characteristics—whether hand-dyed or specialty fiber blends—to shine through while maintaining structural integrity. The efficient one-skein design makes this pattern ideal for stash-busting or showcasing limited-quantity artisan yarns.
