Product Description
The Taro Tee is a really simple and basic t-shirt style top, with no major design features. It's what I would call a "blank slate" sort of design that you can modify to your liking, if desired. You could knit it longer for a less cropped look, add an edging (see notes!) to the hem, sleeves, and neck, make the sleeves longer, or just knit the pattern as is! It's up to you. I find that simple and plain garments are the ones that get the most wear in my wardrobe.
Taro Tee by Kiyomi Burgin
What is Being Made
The Taro Tee is a hand-knitted t-shirt style top designed by Kiyomi Burgin as an intermediate-level knitting project. This garment is intentionally designed as a versatile "blank slate" style, featuring a simple and basic construction with no major decorative design elements. The pattern is available in nine sizes, with finished bust circumferences ranging from 91.5 cm (36") to 173 cm (68"), accommodating a wide range of body measurements. The design is intended to be worn with approximately 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8") of positive ease, though a minimum of 5 cm (2") of positive ease is recommended for proper fit.
Design Philosophy and Customization Options
The Taro Tee exemplifies a minimalist approach to garment design. Designer Kiyomi Burgin emphasizes that simple, plain garments are often the most frequently worn pieces in a wardrobe and are particularly enjoyable to construct. The pattern encourages knitters to personalize their finished garment through various modifications. Options include knitting the body longer to create a less cropped silhouette, adding decorative edgings to the hem, sleeves, and neckline, or extending the sleeve length beyond the pattern specifications. Alternatively, knitters may choose to follow the pattern exactly as written without modifications.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental garment construction techniques suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern utilizes standard shaping and finishing methods appropriate for a fitted t-shirt silhouette. The straightforward design allows knitters to focus on fundamental knitting skills while producing a wearable, practical garment.
Yarn and Materials
The Taro Tee is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for a t-shirt style garment. Knitters will require appropriate knitting needles suitable for 4-ply yarn, as well as standard finishing supplies for seaming and binding off edges.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern document. The pattern includes a schematic diagram on page 7 providing detailed measurements for all sizes, enabling knitters to verify proper fit before beginning construction.
