Product Description
Tant par tacher (just to start) was created as an introduction to top sweater down knitting for beginners. The pattern is extremely simplified, using on large needles at 14 stitches over 10 cm (4”) to make the knitting easy and quick. Ribbed borders and body and sleeves in stockinette stitch contribute to further simplifying the knit. I decided to add many shaping options for the more experienced knitters and for those who already know how to knit top down, as well as for the more ambitious and daring beginners. None of these modifications is essential, you may want to knit the sweater in its simplest form, but if you want a more tailored garment you have many options at your disposal for customization. I have used a different typeface for the customizations: always knit the parts in the body typeface, and choose how to customize your own sweater (if you want to). I have suggested a wide range of yarns in different prices.
Tant par tacher Knitted Sweater by Alice Twain
What is Being Made
Tant par tacher is a top-down knitted jumper designed by Alice Twain as an accessible introduction to top-down sweater construction. The pattern is structured on a multiple of six stitches and offers both simplified and customizable versions, making it suitable for beginners learning the top-down technique as well as experienced knitters seeking tailored fit options.
Knitting Technique
This sweater is constructed using the top-down knitting method, a technique that allows knitters to begin at the neckline and work downward toward the hem. This approach is particularly beginner-friendly because it enables try-on during the knitting process and eliminates the need for complex seaming. The pattern was intentionally simplified to introduce this technique to novice knitters while remaining engaging for more experienced crafters.
The design includes multiple shaping options for customization, allowing knitters to adjust the fit and silhouette beyond the basic construction. While these modifications are optional, they provide flexibility for creating a more tailored garment suited to individual preferences and body measurements.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – used for the body and sleeves to create a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Ribbed stitch – applied to borders and cuffs for elasticity and a finished appearance
Materials and Specifications
Tant par tacher is worked in chunky weight yarn on large needles at a gauge of 14 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches). The generous gauge and bulky yarn weight contribute to quick knitting progress and an accessible learning experience. This combination makes the sweater ideal for completing in a reasonable timeframe while maintaining clarity in stitch definition.
Difficulty Level
Classified as intermediate difficulty, this pattern serves dual purposes: it introduces beginners to top-down construction techniques through a simplified framework, while offering experienced knitters the depth of customization options to create a more complex, fitted garment. The straightforward stitch palette and generous gauge reduce technical complexity, making the intermediate rating accessible to dedicated beginners.
