Product Description
Can you smell the sea breeze?
When we think of shawls, we often think of warm wraps to cover ourselves with during the cold winter seasons. While this shawl can definitely serve that purpose (just use a wool-based fiber!), I created the Taha Moana (Te Reo Maori for “Seashore”) shawl to be a warm-weather accessory. This majestic and flowing shawl, conjures images of moonlight moments by the seaside or quiet reposes under the shade of palm trees overlooking sandy beaches.
The 3/4 shawl shape makes it easy to wear over the shoulders - much more wearable than a triangular shawl sometimes - but if you would prefer to knit a triangular version, instructions are included to make the modification! 4 colors were used in the original sample, but if you wish to make a 3 color or a 2 color version, instructions are included on how to do that as well.
Shown in Mythica Fibers Rustic Silk. A suggested substitute is below.

What Is Being Made
The Taha Moana Shawl is a 3/4 shawl designed by independent designer Francoise Danoy. This elegant knitted accessory combines a garter stitch body with a striped lace border, creating a sophisticated garment suitable for warm weather wear. The shawl's design emphasizes drape and visual interest through the contrast between the textured body and decorative lace edging.
Craft and Techniques
This is an advanced-level knitting project that requires experience with multiple techniques. The construction begins with a garter stitch foundation, which provides a stable, textured base. The striped lace border introduces complexity through lace pattern work, requiring knitters to manage yarn overs, decreases, and color changes simultaneously. The pattern accommodates multiple color combinations, allowing crafters to choose between a 4-color, 3-color, or 2-color colorway depending on their preference and available materials.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch for the main body, creating a reversible, textured fabric
- Lace stitches for the striped border, incorporating yarn overs and decreases for an openwork effect
- Color work techniques for managing multiple yarn colors throughout the striped sections
Materials and Specifications
The Taha Moana Shawl is designed for fingering weight/4-ply yarn. The recommended yarn is Mythica Fibers Rustic Silk, a 100% silk fiber available in 470-yard (430-meter) skeins weighing 100 grams. Silk is chosen for its natural drape and cool properties, making it ideal for summer garments, though the pattern notes that cotton or linen can serve as suitable substitutes.
Yardage requirements vary based on color combination:
- 4-color combination: Main color (MC) requires 780–900 yards (710–825 meters), with contrast colors (CC1, CC2, CC3) requiring 240–300, 230–280, and 120–140 yards respectively
- 3-color combination: MC remains 780–900 yards, with CC1 requiring 360–440 yards and CC2 requiring 230–280 yards
- 2-color combination: MC requires 780–900 yards with CC1 requiring 560–720 yards
The pattern example uses Mythica Fibers Rustic Silk in the colorway combination of Fairy Dust (MC), Unforgettable (CC1), Loyal Friend (CC2), and Meditation (CC3).
Needles: US size 6 (4mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 centimeters) or longer are required. A long circular needle is specifically recommended to accommodate the large stitch count as the shawl expands during knitting. The gauge is 24 stitches by 32 rows.
Design Notes
The pattern emphasizes that silk, while lacking significant elasticity, offers excellent drape and a luxurious hand, making it particularly suitable for a summer shawl. The flexibility in color combinations allows knitters to customize the finished garment to their preferences while maintaining the sophisticated aesthetic of the striped lace border design.
