Product Description

Tabarka is a crop top for girls, perfect for summer holidays on the beach or for hot days at home…

It is worked from bottom up, in one piece. An i-cord is made to finish the borders and to tie the top.

There are two ways to tie it in the back (see photos).

Two versions are explained : striped or lace.

It is fully adjustable, since you cast on stitches depending on the chest circumference, then you adjust the length according to the child’s height.

I propose you 11 sizes, which match about 2 to 12 years sizes.

You will need :

- 90 (100/110/120/130) 140 (150/160/175/190/210) meters / 100 (110/120/130/140) 160 (170/180/200/220/240) yards of fingering cotton yarn in two colours for the striped version,

- 180 (200/220/240/260) 280 (300/320/350/380/420) meters / 200 (220/240/260/280) 320 (340/360/400/440/480) yards of fingering cotton yarn for the lace version.

Tabarka Summer Top for Girls by Atelier des Glenettes

What is Being Made

The Tabarka is a knitted summer top designed specifically for girls, available in two distinct design variations. This downloadable knitting pattern offers sizing from age 2 through age 12, with chest circumferences ranging from 92 cm (36 inches) up to 152 cm (60 inches). The garment is engineered as a lightweight, warm-weather piece suitable for children across a wide age range, with detailed measurements provided for both chest width and length to ensure proper fit.

Design Variations

The pattern includes two separate construction options for crafters to choose from:

  • Striped Version: Features color-work striping throughout the garment, offering visual interest and design flexibility through yarn color selection.
  • Lace Version: Incorporates lace stitch patterns for a more delicate, openwork aesthetic ideal for summer wear.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for crafters with some experience. The pattern utilizes i-cord construction, a specialized technique that creates small, tubular cords often used for edging, straps, or decorative elements. The lace version specifically incorporates lace stitch patterns, which involve strategic yarn-overs and decreases to create openwork designs characteristic of summer garments. The striped version demonstrates color-work knitting, requiring the knitter to manage multiple yarn colors across rows to build the striped pattern.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Tabarka is designed to be worked in fingering weight cotton yarn, a 4-ply yarn weight that provides a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for warm-weather children's clothing. The pattern sample was created using Katia Fair cotton, establishing a specific yarn reference for gauge and drape expectations.

Yardage requirements vary by size and design choice:

  • Striped Version: Requires 90 to 140 meters (100 to 160 yards) per color for smaller sizes, scaling up to 130 to 210 meters (140 to 240 yards) per color for larger sizes, depending on which color is being used.
  • Lace Version: Requires 180 to 280 meters (200 to 320 yards) for smaller sizes, scaling up to 260 to 420 meters (280 to 480 yards) for the largest sizes.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for 3 mm needles (US size 2½) to achieve the appropriate gauge with fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies the need for long circular needles or straight needles for working the main body of the top, allowing for the flat or in-the-round construction depending on the knitter's preference. Additionally, double-pointed needles (dpns) are required for working the i-cord elements, which demand the specialized needle configuration to create the tubular structure.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Tabarka assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches and techniques but may be encountering color-work or lace patterns for the first time. The inclusion of i-cord work and the choice between two different stitch patterns allows crafters to select a version matching their skill level within the intermediate range.
